GW Urban Legends

I used to be in a guild which shall remain nameless. They were decent people, and pretty good players. They even patiently held my hand through the process of installing TS and a microphone on my computer.
Once I was on TS, we used it for nearly every outing. One day, our leader and his wife had this conversation:
Leader: Oh man, I'm trying to cut down these mobs but a moderator is messing with me.
Wife: Oh no, not again! Why can't they leave us alone?
Leader: I dunno, but I keep losing energy and I can't finish casting my spells.
Wife: I think it's happening to me now too!
Leader: Dammit, doesn't Anet have better things to do?
I very politely refrained from pointing out that the mobs we were fighting were mesmers.
I began to notice this more and more. This couple firmly believed that Anet employees were watching them play and screwing up their movement and skill usage. I began to see them typing things like "MOD QUIT NOW!!!", which they claimed always cleared up their lag and made their strategies more successful.
I eventually left the guild when the leader started accusing his wife of somehow doing the same things as the mods. I never got up the courage to ask the other guild members if they also believed in mod ex machina.

So, what bizarre beliefs and misinformation have you encountered in other players?

i just met this guy this very moring in DoA. we are clearing the stygian area with guilde and alliance, he was a rit. We encontered a big groups of mobs, then we started to run, however, this rit in our group start casting spirits while we were running, then i asked :why you casting spirits while we are ruuning? he said, so you guys can see the path where to go next. i dont know if he was joking around or what, but i mean, if the mobs see the spirits, they see you as well, whats the point? some of us got killed like 4 times cuz this. does he understand or not about aggro? we still dont know-_-!
Free Runner
I once met a player in Ascalon that didnt understand the agro bubble on the map. He thought that when you saw a monster from across the map it could also see you and that it began preparing for your attack. He would always run away the moment he saw a red dot appear on the edge of the radar making up weird battle plans.

Was this guy in pre- or post-searing ascalon?
Free Runner
It was post Ascalon in the Breach. The monsters in question were Charr. I know the GoM verions of the Lich and Shiro lock onto you and have a strange agro pattern however this guy thought that every monster would attack you from across the map. I found it funny/strange and did try to tell him it didnt work like that but he would not take my word for it.

To the OP ... ROFLMAO.
You should have told them to make aluminum foil hats so Anet couldn't read their thoughts.

I just remembered something else about this same guild. They had a policy of kicking for inactivity . . . not because they wanted active members, but because they were convinced inactive members were the cause of faction depletion.

Then prove it to them if they don't believe you. I have swindeled many people to think a different way with proof.

Another story that went around for quite some time, was that if you used Monk healing spells such as Heal Area on your undead minions that the degeneration rate of their health would increase. I would be in groups that required a MM and the leader would berate me for healing the minions with that spell.
(Watch, someone will come back and say that it is true and that I am an idiot noob for using Heal Area on my minions)

Once you reach legendary Survivior, you don't need a weapon anymore, you can use hand to hand combat!
o-kayyyy. I made it up. I'm sorry. I'll go away now.

Yeah I remember getting yelled at for using Heal Area too. Couldn't change their mind at all. Thought it was funny more than anything though x].
Oh and I had a nuker using Firestorm on purpose to break aggro, as "individual monsters are easier to kill". Doubt he realize that the foe monks had same range as allied monks... and that it's actually easier to kill stuff in a mob anyways. Especially coming from a nuker. -_-.

I have heard a rumor that there used to be free chests in the Southern Shiverpeaks that would drop Elite loot and such...i don't believe it tho. Also someone said they had an unconditional weapon...but i think they are just dupers
Edit:
Sorry for the confusion i was just being "urban mythy" i do realize that the above did happen...but to new players it would seem as if its a myth....etc was just making a joke :P

i think it was meant as unconditional damage. instead of 15%^50 it is just plain 15% extra damage...no conditions.

This is a fun thread. Let's see, what's some that I've heard.....
1. I think the strongest most persistent Urban Legend is at the beginning of FOW. DO NOT TALK TO RASTIGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't count how many times I've heard that one. Most people believe that as soon as you talk to him, he immediately latches onto your group and leeroys everything in sight.
This isn't true. He won't leave the starting point until you kill one of the Shadow Rangers or Abyssals. At that point he'll run and join you. At that point, I usually hear non-stop griping from the group leader. "Which %$#@ moron talked to him???" The only legitimate reason I can think of not to talk to him at the beginning is to prevent the first mob from accidentally killing him.
2. Hmm, this is one that I believed for wayyy too long. I thought the UW portal in Lornar's Pass would allow entrance to the UW even if you didn't have favor. (And yes there is an UW entrance in Lornar's Pass. Tried convincing my guildies for a month that it really did exist!)
3. You cannot change your 2ndary profession in Nightfall until you reach the Chantry of Secrets. This is another one that I hear all the time. Yes you can!! Geez, people, have you never stepped into the Command Post????
4. "WAHHH!!! That warrior in my team just got a 2nd gold drop and I haven't gotten any yet!!!!!!!" He's running a HACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE REPORT HIM NOW!!!!!!
5. This is one that my guild is helping to perpetuate. Click on the guards in Heroes Ascent 100 times for a free fame.
6. And of course everyone's all time favorite urban legend, the legend that is so persistent, so old, so popular and will forever appear in every online game that has ever been made and will ever be made..............
do you know what it is?
you've seen it!
you may even have spread it!
Have you guessed yet?

Not saying ur wrong, just pointing out fact / idea behind their nonsense.... the longer they live the more degen they receive...

Anyone ever hear bout how since runes wont "stack" that you can only get bonus from 1 run at a time..... ya had to convince a few newblets that their guild leader was wrong... conversation was about expertise, wilderness, marksmanship runes, their guild leader told them to only put 1 of them on total (as in just marksmanship) because he thought that "not stackable" meant that you could only have 1 attribute type rune on at a time, and placing another on would remove the prior, even if on different piece of armor.

This is one of the few pranks I've ever pulled in an MMO. In GW I used to do it to the guys constantly spamming "where do I get my hat?" during Festivals.
Silly Warrior
Thats just hilarious, I don't have any stories that absurd and funny though.

Good thread.
Does everyone know about the "exploint" in the Gyala Hatchery mission? You know, the "back door". Following the right path you can not activet the turtles movement and kill all the Kurz from the end of the mission forward. Making keeping the baby turtles alive a very simple matter.
Well, I can remember after this was discovered every new build would bring a string of claims that they closed "bug". I belived it the first few times and would go to the mission to test it. Always did work. Still does.

Every Halloween someone will say "Go talk to the Mad King for extra prizes!!1!". Also, that shouting "Pick me!" will actually make the Mad King pick you. I never did it and was chosen twice in a row. :P

That where this belief may have started because people were keeping their minions alive for so long that the degen rate would just go through the roof. There have been many times where I am running around with ten minions and they all drop in the first few seconds of combat becaue I kept them alive too long. Fresh kills, fresh kills.......

One of the legendary beliefs is that a req 9 weapon deal more damage than a req 12 weapon, even if you have 12 points in the weapon's attribute.
