First Obsidian Armor set - can't decide!

First and foremost, punch me in the face if this is in the wrong forum, I scoured through the rest and figured this one would best suit it...

So here's the deal: I'm dead set on buying my first set of Obsidian armor, only problem is I cannot decide to save my life which character I want to get it for.

I'll list what I've got, and some notes regarding them getting the set...

- Male Warrior
>Main character, deserves it the most - most titles, equipment and such - and it would be my final armor set for his Hall of Monuments, but I'm not really too sure on the look - I'd likely end up hiding the chest peice and mixing around with the rest of my sets...

- Male Monk
>Secondary main, almost as deserving as my Warrior. I've gotten the most XP with him, played him the most, and he only has 15k Kurzick and 1k farming tattoos - again, not that much of a fan of the monk armor simply because everyone seems to have it!

- Male Ranger
>First character, barely use him any more. I like the look of the armor, already have the gloves from buying them about two years ago. Problem is I haven't been able to enjoy playing a Ranger that much these days

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

These next 3 are all in a very similar situation, in that I absolutely love the armor, but haven't spent nearly enough time on them to consider them deserving of it.

- Male Elementalist
>He has bugger all skills (he was made for farming and farm he does), no other prestige armor nor weapons (just base skin golds). For him to be considered deserving I would need to get him almost all the Elementalist skills, find him some nice skin weapons, and be able to have a lot of fun playing him (wouldn't be hard if I could run any build under the sun).

- Male Ritualist
>I can't have fun with this guy. I just can't find a build I enjoy playing in PvE, and it really annoys me because the male rit armor is my favourite in the entire game. No titles, no gold weapons, I bought him 15k Imperial to try and convince myself to use him more but it fell through after a few weeks of being bored of taking care of spirits. If I could find a couple of builds that were fun to play (see also: effective and useful) I'd consider changing to him as my main, and he'd be worthy of the armor - but right now I just don't want to waste the first set on him.

- Male Dervish
>Almost exactly the same as the Ritualist, except he doesn't have 15k armor already, and I prefer the Rit armor slightly over this one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you have it, all I ask now is your opinion - who should/could be the first of my characters to have Obsidian armor?

(PS: Bare in mind that one way or another, I will be getting my Warrior Obsidian Armor before GW2 comes out, for the sake of a full Hall of Monuments with Obsidian Armor in it!)

Read again what you wrote here. It answers your question.

On a different note, it perplexes me whenever threads like this one pop up. Nobody in these forums is ever going to see your character...why would we care which armor you buy? Pick the one you will most enjoy staring at, and quit worrying about trying to impress other people with pixels. Trust me, no one else really gives a crap.

The fact that you think certain fictional characters "deserve" armor more so than any other one, leads me to believe you're a little too into this.

Want my advice? Get it for the one that people are going to see the most. If you farm FoW nightly with your ele, but during the day you do quests and skill cap blah blah blah on your warrior you'd be dumb to get it on your warrior unless you have the hots for Tahnkora or something.

All in all, it doesn't really matter. If your going to get it for your war regardless, might as well get it for a different one so you still have a goal to grind towards.

Get it for your warrior first.

Then whoever you like it for after that.

I'll argue against that with the hundreds of times I've seen characters wearing Obsidian armor praised or slandered for the looks (Warriors copping the most lip, of course).

Haha, I used the word "Deserve" as an indication of how much effort I've put into the character. I've been saving for this stuff ever since I found out about it, and I'd rather not blow it on one that looks shitty / will make me regret buying it.

Well when you put it in the "Who will it be seen on" perspective, it's a tie between the Warrior and the Monk.

As a side note, I should clarify that this thread is half asking "What's your favourite FoW armor" and half asking "What's a good, fun build for a Rit or Dervish?"

Get it for your warrior. What if you're not able to get another set to put into the Monument? What if you die or something else bad happens? What if you get bored down the road?

My favorite is FoW for femme mesmers.

Well, you are asking for opinions, and my opinion will be kind of harsh. Ranger FoW blows. Unfortunately for you, you made a male warrior and monk, their armors look much better on female characters, the male, just look bulky and kind of ridiculous. The metallic look for elementalists looks decent, but the spikes remind me to much of a goofy professional wrestlers outfit. Ritualists, I really don't know what to say about them with the horns on their head and the things on their shoulders....again, goofy is the best word I can think for them. The male dervish is kind of good, the chest piece is pretty lame but the spiked balls on the chains for the dress they wear looks good. I would get the chest for the Hall of Monuments and then later get a better chest piece. This is a link to the pictures of all these armors for those who are wondering.

If you are fishing for compliments in local chat to stroke the ol' e-peen, maybe GW isn't the right place for you. There are lots of other games where equipment actually matters. Another option would be to cut back on computer time and join a gym. You might even get RL praises then...at least they're worth something.

I am pleased with the female mesmer, monk, and ranger...as well as both genders of paragon. The other sets are mediocre and/or repulsive.

You do not need to buy the armor if you do not like the looks.

If it is just to show others "here, I have FoW armor", you will not be happy with it for too long.

The HoM also does not seem to elevate the armor in any way above other 15k armors so far.

As GW1 is basically done, save your ectos and stuff, buy an armor you like, and wait if there is a special reason to get obsidian armor for GW2, besides vanity in GW1. It might end up being a thing of pure looks, just like tormented weapons which are even worse off and cannot be added to the HoM at all.

If you want a comment on the armors, I think only the main deserves such an expensive armor. And at least the warrior helmet is nice...^^

Warrior FOW is ugly in my opinion, and there are way too many people with it.

Go for monk, or none at all.

Go for the obsidian Ele armor. That's the only male ele armor that's half descent

I didn't say I was hungry for "ooooo shiny" from the populace of the game. I'm getting the armor as a personal achievement milestone. You might have missed the part where I said if I chose to get a set for my Warrior I would likely not wear most of the set.

And come on, you completely ignored the fact it's taken me 2 years to save up for this stuff. Don't go throwing 'step outside' crap at me, you don't even know me.

Finally, this actually helped! All I wanted from you was an opinion on the armors, not a blurred stab at my attitude to the game.

Thanks to everyone else that's posted so far, sounds like most people lean away from the Warrior and more towards the Monk.

That is like hanging a sign around your neck saying "I suck"

Red or a light blue looks best, or be really wild and dye it orange/green.

I was going to get for my monk...seems the most deserving..then I wanted for my necro as that one seems even more deserving because it actually works for whatever ecto I get with that char...

Then I decided not to get any at all. I'm going to take my 104 ecto and 135 shards and sell them, and get alot more cool stuff for all my characters than just one set of armor for one character that I may or may not get bored of down the road.

I don't like too many obsidian armors for male characters...they all look strange to me.

I own warrior and paragon obsidian sets and I'm very happy with them. My warrior is also my main character, just like in your case, and while I admit it has its flaws, I still wear it most of the time (maybe because I wanted it so much).

If you want to buy it for the looks, get the one you like the most. And the fact that a lot of people already have it isn't a reason not to buy it: the game is out for over 2 years, it's normal that a lot of people got the money to buy their favorite sets.

I hope this helps. And please don't dye it black, no matter what set you choose.

I answered your poll of what FoW armor I would like.

Ritualist, IMO, has the best FoW armor. It's a shame you don't like playing a Rit, they are quite fun, and have some of the best armor in the game (Norn Rit armor is my second favorite).

Pudding! Imo you should get it for the character you play the most. I used to play my female ele and got her one, then my necro also got her set, then finally my female warrior after getting bored of the other professions. Now I play my warrior the most. So thats three Obsidian armors total. Planned on getting a fourth one but kept the ectos instead for highend trades. Main characters are the ones to get the armor for. If anything, get another set for another character in the future.

Get what you like? Its all FoW comes down to really. Three experiences:

I first purchased FoW for my female warrior as for a long time she was my main. I like how it looks on a female warrior much, much better than on a male character (however its my preference as I can say this for almost all characters), but its now become less favored. I only got it because she was my main at the time and I wanted my main to have FoW. Period. I dont play her as much anymore and there are other armors I'd prefer her to have. My favorite at that time was female ele. The only reason I didnt get it for her was she was not as developed a character and I wasnt playing her anymore. I am playing her now and in retrospect I wish I had it for her instead.

I then started playing my monk a lot, and then exclusively. She quickly became my favorite. She is now who pursues the majority of titles. She bought FoW because despite my experience with my warrior and tides changing, I absolutely loved female monk FoW. Didnt matter to me who had it, how many had it, if anyone cared. It simply was my favorite monk armor in the game and is still one of my favorites.

I'm currently, finally, playing my ritualist a bit when Treya has a little down time. She's new, so she's less developed than any character. While it'd be silly in a lot of ways to consider FoW for her, its the next set of FoW I want as its my favorite armor of all the ritualist armors available. Because of my experience with my ele, I am comfortable just going for it simply because I like it. Amount of time I play the character, how developed they are, who cares really? Cant say I'll actually get it, just that I am musing it over and I have a long way to go if I would wish to. My other characters are set with what they have and dont need FoW (save my ele maybe one day getting it finally), so why not on my ritualist? She'd be happy.

Moral of three examples: Tides change and so will what character you play and favor, as well as what armors you prefer. My monk's FoW remains in favor for me, but she spends as much time wearing something else, if not more time, than she does actually wearing it. You basically cannot, and I would argue must not, go by others' opinions on FoW. Get what makes you happy and make sure it does. Dont let other reasons influence. Just realize you're very likely to use a couple characters and even store your FoW for some time in favor of wearing something else. No one armor set makes you happy for good (at least in my experience). My monk has five and she'd have more were it not for the fact that storage is an issue and other characters want a couple sets too.

If you have a male Elementalist this is no choice at all - there are no other armors that doesn't look ... queer on a male elementalist!
Get Destroyer Gauntlets to go with that and dye the FoW orange - looks amazing!

If you want a 2.nd choice - Male Monk!

(Also just so happens that those two are the characters I personally have FoW on )

(ranger FoW and Warrior FoW is boring imo)

A buddy of mine bought FoW for his female ranger and dyed it brown! He thinks it looks like suede - the rest of us thinks it looked like he went swimming in human waste! Brown dye has subsequently been renamed after him!
(No names - he'll know it's him if he reads this )

Agree with the whole - "don't dye it black" thing!

Cheers!
