Faded Text for Distant Targets
Hamfast
I almost consider this a BUG REPORT rather than a suggestion, but since nothing is TECHNICALLY wrong, I'll just make it a stong suggestion (and a cry for HELP from the GW folk who browse these forums).
I play GW at 1600x1200 resolution, and even with text size set to maximum, it is still very tiny. But I have been playing since the Prophecies Betas, and am accustomed to it.
A couple weeks ago they instituted FADED text to indicate targets more than 1000 feet away. Aside from the fact that my text is also very SMALL, the faded text is EXTREMELY difficult to read. Sure, I'm an old fogey with thick glasses, but a number of my friends have trouble reading it as well (and not all of them use the higher resolutions.)
I NEED to be able to see this text to pre-select my targets from a safe distance before we wade into combat. (I am traditionally my Guild's "caller", and believe in knowing what I'm up against before I attack. I can't do this if I can't read the text.)
My friends also complain that they are missing a lot of treasure drops. (White drops a little way off look GRAY, and can be overlooked as a dead body - also in gray text). It also makes it harder to locate NPCs in town. We are all really squinting and sitting closer to the monitor these days!
SUGGESTION:
I understand that it can be (mildly) helpful to know at a glance which targets are far away and which are close. So instead of making far-away text dimmer, how about making closer text a bit LARGER? That would accomplish the same thing and remove the legibility problem that a lot of us are having now which didn't exist before.
At the VERY LEAST, can't we at least make the faded text an OPTION, so that those of us who are having difficulty reading it can go back to the old view?

For loot coming up as gray text, you can press ";" to target the nearest item to help find any missed loot.
But I very much agree with having a toggle option on the faded text.

I suggest we make the whole fade thing optional because it pisses me off regardless.

I will /sign this.
I end up squinting at the screen to see stuff - foes or loot or NPCs in towns. Even nearby loot simply disappears in the snowy regions -.-
Hate this and would be EXTREMELY grateful if they just added a toggle for this function.

I'm pretty much legally blind (180/20 vision FTL), and if my eye site gets worse, I plan to blame it on this shit (and possibly press legal action, have to see what my lawyer/optometrist have to say).
If you dumbass developers plan to implement a completely needless option, at least study before you do it, because opacity DOES strain the eyes.

I hate this thing as well, and changing it has been requested before I believe. A toggle option would be perfect.
Right now this whole thing is annoying, I miss distant items (turning gray instead of white) because a gray item means that it's reserved for another party member.
I wish they never implemented it, a completely pointless addition imo.

Since they made it, a lot of my farming has been difficult because I can hardly read any of the monster text, and I have missed a lot of decent drops regardless.

From the responses so far, I almost have to say why make it an option at all? Nobody seems to be saying anything in FAVOR of it. Just drop it altogether! I'm sure that would be even easier for the techs to impliment.

I have to say, I sort of like the faded text feature. However, I think something like that should always be an option.

YAY! Someone understands me! Make it an OPTION! Don't force a UI on us without giving us a choice. Thats why we can move our interface around using F11. Just make a note "Faded Text For Distant Targets" and have a box by it, check it if you want it, uncheck if you don't.

I'm new to this message board...
The response to making faded text an option is 100%.
What is your experience with stuff like this... does someone from GW really read these boards and address changes that the players would like to see? If so, does 100% agreement with a proposal mean anything to them, or does the issue need to have a large number of responses before they take it seriously? It's not as if it can be a hard computer code to write, is it?
The last time I had a game suggestion, I sent it directly to GW support. They sent me a form letter that said I should post to the fansite message boards, so that's what I did this time. The Guru Boards are the first ones listed on GuildWars.com. Yoo-hoo! Hellooooooo! Are you out there? I am really, REALLY having problems with this, and would like to see it addressed soon! C'mon, GW! Let's see some action!

while we are on the topic of text color, can we possibly have, outside of town, character / hench / heros name highlight to be not the same color as green drop? I almost always miss them thinking its an npc standing nearby most time kind players have ping to alert me to pick it up.

Agree it should be made an option.
As for me, I like the faded text. It helps me determine what mobs are in the closer vs the farther group when one group is directly behind another.

People where suggesting this as soon as it was implimented. Can't believe a.net hasn't done it yet.

This issue is one of game-playability for me, and I am getting very discouraged that they did something like this and don't seem to be listening to what the players are saying.
