Just finished watching Big Fish on the Sci-Fi channel, then decided to keep the TV on to see the preview for this new retelling of the Wizard of Oz.

Two pieces of music they've played have sounded very familiar. Guild Wars music, more specifically from Nightfall and Eye of the North. One that plays in some Tyrian areas, the other in Vabbi (and also during Rollerbeetle racing events).

Can anyone confirm this? Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe Jeremy Soule composed for them and the pieces are indeed similar. It's still on as I write this, so tune in and have a listen.

Addition: It is from Guild Wars, I'm in Oola's Lab at the moment and the music is almost exactly in sync with the Tin Man preview. It's creepy!

Tim Burton's "Big Fish"? With Ewan MacGregor, Billy Crudup, etc etc etc?

If so, good film. Worth seeing again... and again... and again.

On topic, I can't wait to find out what Gaile discovers. I'm going on an IMDb quest now to see what I can see.

EDIT: I'm back from my exploration... Original music by Simon Boswell http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910812/fullcredits#cast

And here's a trailer w/ a taste of the soundtrack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sjnie-aqYw

Yeah, I'd love to see this preview! I'm going to do a quick search now...

Edit: Searched and didn't find anything GW-like. If anyone else has any more luck, please post.

Sounded more like Requiem for a Dream rather than Guild Wars.

The preview was actually a 30-minute "behind the scenes" show, couple cast interviews, bits on special effects, etc. It wasn't just a 15-second commercial spot, sorry if my initial post seemed to suggest that.

Also, once it finished, they squished down the credits to fit in a Battlestar Galactica Razor commercial, so I couldn't see who made the preview. I think I saw "©2007 <something>smash Inc." but couldn't make out the rest.

That's the one!

Although, how can it be "original" if it's been already used in another production? The music from Vabbi (and Rollerbeetle racing) is unmistakable.

Maybe the credits should read "Original music by Jeremy Soule but borrowed from a previous project, Guild Wars"

Was Jeremy allowed to use this same music in another project?

It depends on what kind of exclusivity clause is in the contract with JS. Basically, it can be exclusive use by ArenaNet in the GuildWars game or non-exclusive use where the artist can sub-license to other concerns, or non-exclusive use where the artist and ArenaNet both can profit from sub-licensing the music to other concerns.

"Original Music" usually just refers to that it is the musicians own music instead of, say, a fair-use classical piece.

Personally, I say "congrats" to Jeremy. I imagine that gig paid fairly well. And unless ANet has some exclusivity deal it's his music and he can do whatever the hell he wants with it, as ANet simply licensed the rights to his work.

People that do theme songs (like Danny Elfman) make pretty good money. It sometimes sure beats being a struggling band touring, playing dive bars, trying to find houses to crash at or sleeping in a cramp van full of smelly bandmates. And of course getting riped off by shoddy promoters.

Congrats to Jeremy for getting his brilliant works published and showcased outside of the Guild Wars universe, and hopefully to a whole new audience.

Very interesting. I thought I recognized a snippit of music while watching Atlantis the other night, and sure enough it was true!
