Has anyone considered quiting GW because of lag issues?

I did consider quitting because of lag but then I got a new computer and it has been pretty much lag free since then

Pretty much sums me up. I mean, I have had the occasional lag spike from time to time, but I'd say 99.9% of the time it's A-OK end except during holidays. Those rare lag spikes could be issues on my end, though.

Ima Paladin err07'd out of a championship match (on what should have been a LAN) that caused his team to lose. He then threw his headset into the crowd watching the teams play, and ANet still didn't care. Are they really going to fix the shitty servers because of this thread? ...

Um,Lag issues? What are you talking about? I'm on a 2 and a half year old computer(Buying a new one on my birthday) and I have NO problems running GW. No lag. At all. Every time I go on a game forum people complain about the lag "@NET SUXZ0RS MAHCOCK MANG SHITTEH SEVARS". It's not the servers its your computer that dates back farther than 2000.

No, really, Anet's servers are quite bad. There are far more people that have problems than those who don't.

I don't lag at all or very very rarely and very very little.

I'm thinking it's you computer and/or your internet connection. Check that before you blame ANET.

Take a traceroute to the IP listed in the corner, see where your bottleneck is. If you see a router has a bad response time, send in a ticket to your ISP so they can get it fixed (or they can open a ticket with their peer so they can clean up the issue).

However, if their is no report to the telecom/ISP company, they may not see an issue.

I quit GW because of lag and partially because I needed a new game.

It's pretty stupid, playing at 3am (Mountain) and I'm getting lag spikes.
Pissed me off so hard.

Even when I go and do a few solo runs, I still get lag spikes.

No... if its computer lag then just get a new computer.
Internet lag= get better dsl/cable! your internet may be acting up or something
I have a normal dsl connection and I am fine... no lag.
Problem fixed.

most of europeans have heavy lag on gw.

I ve got 70ping on every fps and 250/600 on gw most of the time. Same goes for many friends. builds with 1/4 cast skills like infuse, prot spirit and interupts are hard to play now.

I ve head a lot of friends thinking to move for any other game, bored that they can t play normal build due to those lag.

Thing is, i suspect Anet to get less servers, they wont sell any new guild wars, they don t care anymore.

Part of the problem is that GW has had its system requirements gradually increase over the years. GW Prophecies could be run easily, but GW:EN consumes a lot more RAM to perform all the fancy new graphic functions. A computer that could have run GW perfectly fine 2 years ago might struggle a lot now.

Really, I'm kinda ticked at all the kiddies here saying "buy a new computer." I'm sorry, but some people here have to pay $1500 for a new CPU, and not just have daddy buy it for them. That's a lot of money to throw down for a video game.

Even though I am clearly seeing that I have cleared and ran off....for me personally this is a major turn off in the game, since I am wasting a lot cash trying over and over again, seriously I think ANET should do something about this issue because personally it drives me up the wall.

Other then that the game is wonderfull

Pol

PS: I have a 4 megabyte connection which has been more then good since the 2 years I have been playing gw

Try using a 56k dialup modem connection and taking 1-2 hrs jsut to downlaod each zone *100.....i have those issues and lag yet i sitll play the game FFS quit bitchingn please. People in 3rd world have better net than some developed countries and the opposite can be said.

As I said above, "I am not bitching" this is simply an observation as a player who plays the game for the fun of it.

In reference to your "3rd World Countries", i am not comparing nor am i moaning about it, this is just a critisism and an observation as many people on this thread have mentioned that everyone has had lag this is simply a place to either express there opinions or let ANET know there is an issue.

Nothing more.

You'd be suprised how much maintenance on telecom networks occur from 11pm-6am (standard window for out of hours work).

Yes, I have considered quitting; I've pretty much just played a whole lot less.

Once again odds are it's not the servers. It doesn't matter how fast your connection is. If it was a LAN then it still had to have an outside connect unless Arena Net brought in a server and set up GW on a server that was segregated from everything but the LAN. If that was the case then it hardly applies to the lag most people are experiencing since that had to be equipment based, i.e. a bad router or switch. If it was, and I think this is more likely, a LAN that had an outside connection to the Arena Net servers then odds are it was a node at some point along the route.

I don't get some of the people in this thread. It's like you people honestly think that when you connect to Arena Net you make a direct connection from your computer to their server with no intervening computers in between. That is not the case. What happens is you hit the local hub for your ISP. At that point your ISP looks at the available routes and picks the least trafficked of them, not necessarily the fastest just the least trafficked. It then shoots your signal to that server which repeats the process, looking for the least trafficked node and so on and so forth until it gets to Arena Net. Not all internet connections are created equal so during this process it is entirely possible for even the fastest connections on the market to lag. Why you may ask? Well usually because one of those nodes that you get routed through has less bandwidth than your own line. So you are sending out information at X speed but the connection can only relay it at speed Y.

Arena Net doesn't have any control over what route you take to get to their server. That is all your ISP. Now in all the traceroute's I've run so far I have never received more than a 20ms ping time from Arena Net's server. I'm on a 512 KB cable connection and I go through 16 hops to get to the server so I'm about typical for the technology most people use to play this game. In all instances where my in game ping rate was abysmally slow when I ran a trace route on it invariably I found that one node along the way had a high ping rate,NOT ARENA NET'S SERVER. So if you want to quit anything because of lag then quit your ISP and stop whining that Arena Net needs to upgrade their servers. Their servers are actually responding just fine and I have the trace routes to prove it. Get a better connection, change your ISP but don't expect that problem to change as long as network neutrality is still in effect.
