Inappropriate Language
Rainywinter
So, let me get it straight.
There is a chat filter you can turn on, if you don't like to be exposed to inappropriate language, and you can leave it off if you wish,
however, if you say words like s*** and f*** and get reported you will get temp ban or ban for inappropriate language?

Just keep swearing to within your Guild Chat, but if you really feel the need to unload on someone in 'normal' chat, then swear in Latin!

Smile Like Umean It
Again, the chat filter does not negate the responsibility of the player and it doesn't give you the right to be a potty mouth.
Rainywinter
If its not allowed to swear no matter what, why let people choose if to turn it off or on?
I believe its contradicting each other. Either you allow it, or you filter it out. Why leave the players who don't read the EULA, and the vast majority of players don't, the ability to not use the chat filter, when not using it may get you banned?

Swear in Guild chat, and you could still get reported.
Over in WoW, I've reported my own guildies before, though it has been a long time since I've done so. Over here in GW, my guild leader has done it as well - report and guild kick. If I recall right she did it to someone who couldn't keep his misogyny to himself.

Guild and alliance chat abuse will get you kicked out of a lot of guilds. Know the rules of your guild (and alliance).
Why do you need to swear? There are better ways to express yourself.

No one is safe from vindictive people...

I agree, Ive kicked many people from guilds for not being able to control their words. And Ive reported several who tend to spam obscenities in local chat. I can understand frustration and every once in a while, a nice 4-letter word is needed...but there is such a thing a too much...and theres where /report comes into play.

There are much more constructive ways to express anger than swearing. I agree with others, excessive swearing is agitating to look at.
Golden rule of thumb: If you wouldn't use that language to an employer, then don't use it in game.
I've gotten frustrated at the game on occasion. I took out my frustration by mopping the kitchen. Took it out on the floor. Or taking a walk, take it out on the pavement.

A year ago, the biggest complaint people had concerned the sad shape of the GW community - or lack thereof. Fortunately, A-Net's taking steps clean it up & making this game one with a better environment for the community as a whole. I for one am glad they're doing it. Everyone needs to take a lesson here- READ THE EULA! When you accept the terms of the EULA, like any contract, you're bound by those terms and have no leg to stand on if you've been banned/suspended for breaching the terms of the EULA.
Another piece of advice I have for all those who use the foul language - work on your vocabulary! This morning, IRL, I overheard an argument between a couple of siblings across the street. Within less than 5 minutes, the girl must have used the "F" word 30 times, and that's no exaggeration!

A bit of swearing here and there never hurt anyone, well not unless you're some sort of prude from the American bible belt that is!

And not everyone wants to hear it and you don't have a right to force it on them.

Swearing is everywhere, deal with it, ya, sometimes it is excessive, but its always going to be there, deal with it.

The problem is that EULAs and contracts are designed to be... flexible. It is not the clear curse words and bans that are a problem, it is the border line stuff. Example : I don't think I curse. BUT, every now and then I might use the word @ss, like in "don't be an @ss"... Now, if today thats ok and tomorrow somebody gets offended, then I am out.
When we define what is offensive by who gets offended, we get in trouble because everybody gets offended at something. The Arabs are offended because a teddy bear is called Mohamed. So here we go : no curse words, no religious names, no references to Nazis, Jews, etc...
My solution : I agree to the EULA. And I respect ANets right to police their environment. So why not create a "dictionary of no-no words", and publish it on a web site, with the appropriate disclaimers. And then people know what is ok, and what isn't, and no arguments.
And yes, I do think that some of the /reports can be answered with "turn on your filter"...
And to other comments :
- I turn off the local channel on chat many times. Lots of garbage talk there anyway. I only stay on local long enough to do whatever I am doing, if anything at all. Mostly to give away crap (ups, there goes crap)...
- Who pays attention to other player names? I can barely remember them when they ARE in my PUG. People are sitting in town reporting other player's char names?? Get a life...
Like forums, the game can be over-moderated and under-moderated. ANet should strive to get a balance. Yeah, some obvious curses are out, but you also have to be able to answer "get a life" every now and then.

Why would you turn on local to give away stuff, that's what trade is for.
Honestly, I might report you for that before I reported you for anything else.
Your example is a bad one, "don't be an @ss"
- that's something you say intended to insult someone. That's not innocent at all. It is a perfect example of reportable language not so much from the word @ss but from the hostile intention behind its usage in that context.
You're calling someone out as disagreeable to you, and to drive it home you are adding profanity.
A perfect example of what reportable language is for - to stop harassment, fighting language, flame wars, and the creation of a hostile gaming environment.
In that example, you are using those words to provoke, with the intention of provoking, the put someone else down.
Far from an example of 'innocent use of colorful language' that example is the perfect case for reportable language.

While in reality, it'll be limited to a very close circle of acquaintances.
When dealing with public in general, people don't swear. Or if they do, they make themselves look as complete uncivilized idiots. Unfortunately, many don't realize that.

"Colorful language" is debatable. One night on TeamSpeak I was describing a geographical feature to find a treasure. It was a hill that I described as "A mammary gland with a nipple in the center." Silence for a minute or so, than someone replied "That was so PC it took me a minute to figure out what you said."

LoL.... See, to me an ass is a donkey, which is far from some of the other curse words you read online everywhere, including these forums. Calling somebody an ass, or lets say a donkey when they do something idiotic seems nicer than calling them an idiot, which in my understanding is a stronger insult.

Meh. It's all so stupid the chat filter. It filters out "quim" from General Quimang...
I keep swearing to a minimum myself as there really isn't a need for it. Take 2 minutes away from the keyboard if you feel you're getting frustrated

I don't swear much because my Heroes and henches won't answer back... much...

Stop The Storm
I think i can conclude this thread nicely.
Swearing is fine, you have a swear filter, use it.
EVADING the swear filter is not fine, forcing inappropriate profanity onto kids and others is unfair and deserves bans.
