Lol, it means you need to post a minimum of 12 characters or a message pops up telling you to add more.
It's got nothing to do with GW.

Along with the smiley code, he's got more than 12 there... it includes spaces, iirc.

Ah, must be another forum I'm thinking of then.
I remember trying to post something with quite a few spaces and it still wouldn't let me post it without adding more letters or symbols.

Before you go off salvaging things to get leather, check what the item is worth and the value of the leather you'd get from it. In my humble experience I've found it to be overall more cost effective to simply merch the items and use the gold to buy the materials. This may not always be the case though - it may depend upon the quantity of materials you get from salvaging an item, and of course, "highly salvagable" items should be salvaged.

Edit: at first I thought you were talking about Tanned Hides, but trying to salvage Leather is even worse. The items you salvage will only sometimes give you Leather, but mostly Tanned Hides - and it requires an expert salvage kit to do it. When you factor in the total value of the things you salvage and the cost of the Expert Salvage kits, it's much easier to merch&purch.

^^ and that one too...

Back to OP. I agree best thing to do is sell the loot to merchant then go to rare material trader and purchase the rare item you need...way easier and mostly like the cheapest route to go.

Or ask someone in your guild if they have any extras. I usually keep crafting materials for anyone in the guild who needs them.
