It says "Enter Challenge" on the right instead of "Enter Mission". Does this mean it's just a little extra something for fun and isn't necessary in completing Factions?

It's a challenge mission, think of it as a 'mini-arcade' type game. You enter and do whatever the objective is and score points. When you die then your points is recorded on a score-board comparing all players that have played it
