What I thought for a new way to get armour - and it is completely different from the current armour system - would be to have a crafter in each major town and and instead of using materials (or u could still use some matrerials) you would take, say, 3 Dredge Plating salvage pieces to an armour crafter and then pay like 1k for 1x armour multiplier, 2k for 2x armour multiplier, 3k for 3x multiplier etc. and the multiplier would be applied to the armour rating of that salvage piece and then multiplied by a multiplier for each class (2 for warrior, 1.8 for ranger etc.).
When you craft armour from a specific species, you get armour that is styled like the armour of that specific creature. E.g. If you wanted to have armour that looked like the Oni armour and you got 3 of their Oni shrouds you could craft their chest and for say 4k you could get a 2 times multiplier on the average AR of the oni shoruds which is then multiplied by the class multiplier.
Another E.g. If I wanted to have armour of similar asthetics to Wardens from factions then I would collect different numbers of pieces of their armour or pieces of armour from different locations of their body ( Warden Skirt, Breast Plate - you get the idea) and then take them to an armour crafter in , say, Droks. I then pay 8k for a medium multiplier on the armour on those pieces and then get the class multiplier for my class, so like 2 for warrior and so on.
I think this way - you get more out of spending time in game rather and having all this really good armour that you spend ages buying just for the looks. And just so that the games even in PVP, the armour rating when you enter a pvp battle is fixed.
Downsides-> some inbalance between players, lots of work for Anet with LOTS of different armour designs to create
Pros-> newer armour system with more designs to choose from, more rewarding armour system.

I'm confused about the armor multiplier thing. So you want to pay 2-4k for an increase in armor? Why not pay 20k for a 200 armor rating? Sounds to me like you're looking for an invincibility set, which isn't going to happen in GW. Armor levels have been what they are since the beginning, and changing that now would completely screw up the game.
/notsigned on multipliers
However, collecting monster armor pieces for a new armor skin is a great idea. Anything that adds a bit of variety is bound to be well received by players, so long as it's only a visual change.
