I see people with 2 classes like xxx/xxx, what is that, and what is the best combination for power. I dont intead to play for fun, but rather to become the strongest possible character. Anyone care to tell me what i should use?

You pick a base class and then later choose a secondary class. Where the base is X, the secondary is Y. So for ease of terminology most people go by XXX/YYY.
Guild Wars, to the best of my knowledge, is highly team based. There is no single class that is "OMG, overpowered r0xx0r'z," simply because to become highly efficient you need a broad range of classes working in conjunction. A monk is a poorly efficient fighter, but there is not a team out there that can survive without one, and while a warrior can take on a great deal of damage, an elementalist might be able to deal out a great bit more. Try and decide your class on what you might think is fun, not on some bandwagon powerhouse.

=P In most of the rpgs i play, i play as a mage, wizard, whatever. What would i choose if i wanted to be a Mage with power, and yet the ability to help the team without killing.

The role of mage in Guild Wars is held mainly by the Elementalist class. As an Elementalist you can choose from four lines of magic, Earth, Wind, Water, Fire. Each has some different attributes attached with the spells that come with them. I believe fire is highly offensive, while earth has a strong defensive set.
Try browsing through here to find something you might like. That's the Builds Directory here at Guild Wars Guru. A build is the general make-up of how your character was put together including classes, skills/spells, and sometimes armors.

Thanks =) Ill probably choose fire then, what class should I combo it with? Im looking for something defensive to go with it. Also can you explain the combonation thing to me?
Loviatar
this is hard to explain but there are no builds that wipe out all other builds
all have strengths and weaknesses that another build can use against them
if you dont want to kill be a monk/mesmer
heal and disrupt the other sides spellcasters
other people will have other combos

Well Ele isn't incredibly defensive, if you want a defensive one try E/Me but if you want a healer do E/Mo

so with Ele/Monk i can heal/defend and have a good attack?
Kiwi
No you can heal and have a good attack. E/Mesmer you have good attack, piss enemies off, and have good defense.

Hmm that EleMes isnt a very good representation of the combo, i think i might just send mine in, anyone know how?
EDIT:
oh and kiwi, the earth line in the elementalist has some very good defensive skills, so if you go earth/fire you can be defense and offense.

I'm doing R/Me, R/W is too weak to be worthwhile.
