Figureprints in GW(3D Replica's of your characters)
cthulhu reborn
I saw that they were gonna do that for WoW and my first thought was...cool, I hope GW does that too!
So yes I'd love it.
So yes I'd love it.
pamelf
Wow, that would cement my nerdiness, but totally yes!
Lord Sojar
A statue of an Aatxe would be cool.

Don't be fooled by the youtube video: that's a guy at cornell making a "3D printer you can build yourself", so it's opensource and..well, not very good: it uses open air conditions and gloopy plastic slow setting goop (which inevitably seeps a bit). But it doesn't need a cleanroom or several massive chest-freezer-sized cabinets.
Professional 3D printers use incredibly fine plastic power layed in a thin, thin layer and then specifically melt and fuse the powder in the desired shape for that "level" of the object using lasers, before laying another fine plastic powder layer on top and fusing that, over and over again. It takes about a day to make a model, but the accuracy is far, far higher. Of course, then you have to remove the model from the huge tub of unused powder and wash all the excess powder off it (you can see them doing this half way through the video where they show you GOOD 3D models), and of course "finely powdered plastic" isn't the best thing for your lungs, and so on: it's a not a 'desktop product'.
Anyway, lots of GW mesh aspects are on 'planes': 2D sheets with no depth. All the trims and frills of lots of ranger/necro/sin armour is like that. Since the printer system they use gets the modelling info direct from the rendering engine, this would be faithfully replicated and...wouldn't work. So I can't see it happening, realistically.

I watched that video, and it's very informative and neat to watch something like that be possible. You could quite literally make anything you desire for your own personal use or selling use.
It's very neat and would love to have that one day.
Gregslot
We are going to have better graphics at GW2 so maybe in a near future, but not today =P
Mordakai
Considering it's a customized figure, it doesn't look that bad.
But, how much does it cost?

Zaganher Deathbane
Yes. That would be great. I really want to see and hold my favorite character on my hand. That's awesome!

This is one of the newer machines.
And for the cost, that WoW making one http://www.figureprints.com/Help/FAQ.aspx
They probably have an older machine.

How much do they cost? $99.95 plus $14.95 Shipping and Handling to any address in the US and Canada. |

Smile Like Umean It
That looks mad cool.
Even if the quality isn't that great, I'd still like one.

I wonder if they have a license from Blizzard - after all, they are making money from Blizzard IP...
Edit: indeed they do...

If i was paying for something like this, i'd want to base it off high polycount models, not in game models.

Yeah, I've seen something like that before in the college courses I've taken and this sort of mass customization is sort of an emerging technology.

Yeah now I'm sold.
Mordakai
Hmmm... $115 seems to be just the threshold of what I would pay.
It would have to look better then the WoW figures, however (I can't tell if the "quality" issue is based more on the source material, or the production process... )
Snark Comment: For Guild Wars, they could probably just make a Warrior in full Primeval Armor and satisfy a majority of players!

Hailfall
I most defenitly would get one of my necro..that be so cool!
Shadow Spirit
I would really like one. I have a few statues of comic book characters etc... It would be cool to add my Necro to the collection.

I think it's a cool idea and the price isn't really bad considering, but I doubt they'd ever do it for GW.

The quality is horrible on small size figures, and the price is huge on large size figures. It takes 7 minutes to print a 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 block with an average printer. It also takes 30 minutes-1 hour to heat up an average 3D printer to the point of use. It seems to me like a very inefficient business. :[ |
ValaOfTheFens
I'd like a figure of my Derv in her Vabbian armor and a Ghostly version of my Necro in pre-Searing armor. Admit it...having your own Ghostly would be awesome.
Jecht Scye
I'd have it done. That technology is amazing.

I think it would be interesting to do as a signing off your character thing. you spent years developing your characters. Here is the crown achievement. the memory of it, put into a physical context.
I think the great thing about doing it for these types of things, is that unlike static figures, these where actually designed and is based on your. it is something you created coming to life.
I think some of you guys have a point though. It takes 3 months to get one, it costs 100, and the quality is not the best. Yet I would still do it for my monk and warrior characters. Totally!!!

LifeInfusion
It's called a rapid prototype machine. It is anything but rapid though, it takes around a day just to print a small hollowed out cone.
I know because I have access to one...
EDIT:the zprinter posted in this thread only prints 400dpi...and it takes 4 hours for that little CAD model

If you read the FAQ, they say that they will alter the model so that it is feasible in physical form. That means that they would give the 2D sheets a third dimension.
Peter Panic
id like one, but its feel too nerdy to actually get it
ThisSuddenInjury
Nah, it'd make me look like a nerd, soz.
Phaern Majes
I'd pay 5$ for a copy of my character made out of cheese. Why not?
Woop Shotty
It's a very cool thing. I don't know how expensive they are, but I would LIKE to have one.
Pickletron
Even if they just sold the main chars from GW I'd buy em. e.g: Koss, Eve, Mhenlo, Cynn etc.
JeniM
People would pay money for that?
Heres my address if you have any other money you don't need feel free to mail it to me

Spores and EA has been printing their characters too. nice to look at but I think its a waste of time, money and material and after 10 years the figures will become another piece of junk that is unable to biodegrade bla bla,(insert those that you don't want to hear stuffs here)
and you know Guild Wars is very fun to play and I absolutely adore it, just so it stick to the rules of the riverside ...
