Sorry to be posting this so late, just found a fix for this problem. It is an error reporting issues, if the graphics don't respond for more then 7ns it restarts them, causing the black screen and the error message (and usually your death because that is when everything is attacking you).
Regedit under run then follow this path.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
ControlSet1
Control
GraphicsDrivers
DCI
Double click Default & Timeout and set both to Zero to disable this feature.
This fixed it for me hopefully will help others.
Search for GraphicsDrives if your path is different.

Sadly this is a driver based error. More or less 80% of the errors you get in Vista are Nvidia's fault.
I'm using the Beta drivers from Nvidia, and haven't gotten that message since.

I fought that error for months, literally.
Your system specs would REALLY help me help you on this.
according to microsquash the display driver error may not be caused by the display drivers, the display drivers are writing to your monitor and when it stops working windows reports that the display drivers have stopped working.
I updated to the P04 bios. I removed the overclock from my processor, which was causing a overheating issue when I was playing GW.
I use a 780i mobo and an intel chip set vista 64 ultimate. list your system specs as complete as you can and we/I may be able to help you more with this.
