Depends on what you want aspect of the game you want to play.

If you simply want PvP, then there's the new PvP Access Kit, which can allow you to play all the professions and get some skill unlocks.

For PvE, the three standalone chapters (Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall) are your options. They can be played in any order. I think there's an article on the main guru site about which chapter to buy. Here it is: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...buy-id2249.php

If you want to start at the very beginning get Guild Wars: Prophecies. Factions and Nightfall are the 2nd and 3rd chapters of the series.

Factions is a fun campaign, but it introduces the various gameplay elements the most quickly; in other words, it doesn't ease you into things. I would suggest you do all the quests in the starting areas and really get a hold of things before progressing. I further suggest you play as a warrior or elementalist initially, since IMO they are the most straightforward to play. A good all around character is something like a warrior/monk, (you get to pick a secondary profession as well).

Anyway, welcome to GW, and have fun!
