Flamed for being nice?
mrvrod
I've helped people with quests and missions, given weapons and items away to those in need, and even occasionally (usually just guild members so I can get whole story) lent or given gold or crafting materials for armor purchase.
I have NEVER had anyone flame me or act poorly. But EVERY time I spend any length of time buying or selling in the major cities I come across the lowliest of the lowly! If you want to get a bad attitude quick, just spend time with those people!
(btw, I am not pidgeonholing all b/s, but it IS the higher concentration of a**holes)

Back when Factions just came out and chest runs outside of Imperial Sanctum (or was it Raisu Palace?) was popular, there was a guy in the party running on his w/mo...
Anyways long story short: he died, I resurrected him using REBIRTH and instead of thanking me he cussed at me for not using a res signet... 'cause I don't know why but he somehow ended up dying AGAIN when the spot where I res'd him was... well VERY safe and empty. His argument was that I DIDN'T use Rebirth and that I used Resurrect... I could've not res'd him at all but oh well. When he finally realized that I indeed did use rebirth, he just started blaming it on his "lag"... but still no gratitude or any apologies for being a dickwad.
I think I still have that screenshot somewhere actually.

Being nice isn't easy or always rewarding.
But stick with it and eventually you find someone who really appreciates what you did for them and end up making a new friend.
That sounds corny, but it's true.

I have to agree, unfortunately. Giving anything away that isn't max can result in a flame, as disgusting as that may be. Either that, or you find some ungrateful kid that doesn't know the meaning of the words "thank you". If you're giving away anything besides a perfect weapon or nice rune, you shouldn't expect them to be grateful...but watch them as they head to the merchant to sell it. Granted, once every so often you may get lucky and find someone who ACTUALLY needs what you're giving away.
But I agree. For the most part trying to be nice anymore isn't worth it. I'd rather just merch something than give it to somebody who's gonna flame me and merch it anyway...

I suggest moving to WoW, community is overall much nicer and actual community (and not just players who flame war in their chat all to time) than Guild Wars one. I have played Guild Wars since Factions was newest released game to series.
Hopefully Guild Wars 2 community is overall bit more mature (how good community is usually happen how well game encourage to cooperate with each other as good community).

I can recall offering advice to someone who complained in local chat that it was "impossible" to defeat "Palawa Joko" for the mock duel bonus in Tihark Orchard if you were playing a monk. I whispered him on how I had done it with my monk and got royally cussed out for my trouble. Oh well.
Mostly, however, I have found the players in GW have been just fine: polite, appreciative, etc. I think it's unfair to characterize the majority of GW players based on the lousy behavior of a few jerks. The good experiences have far outnumbered the bad ones -- at least they have for me.

I don't know what it is about this Wintersday, but I'm finding it really hard to spread the good will. I've tried taking my "Santa" toon around places, giving away cute little nick nacks (tonics, candy weapons, snowmen etc), and I've either been ignored because I'm trying to spread good cheer in a "nice way" (eg: "Happy Wintersday Kamadan, have you been good?" etc) or got laughed at and abused coz they're not leet presents.
It makes this try hard Santa a very sad Panda.

Every once in a while I come across a nice, not quite max, but low req. item and think, "It would have been nice to have one of these when I started out."
Usually I just advertise the item in Ascalon City "Free to the first LVL 6 or less." I've had pretty good success with that because it at least increases the chances that somebody might actually get some use out of it. I'm sure some folk just take it and merch it, but every once in a while, somebody actually puts a little gold or dye or something on their end of the trade. Not a lot but enough to let you know they appreciate it.

For some reason I've come up with a strict philosophy towards giving items away. If you give an item away always give it to a lower level player, they are more likely to be very thankful for the item in question and have greater need for it then a higher level player.
Not to down anyone who's done it before but I think it's just wasteful to give away an object to an upper level player. And if the person takes the object and sells it right away then you shouldn't be able to complain either, you gave it to them and maybe they could use the gold more effectively then you could use the weapon.
oh yea (fork!) almost finished a post without saying fork.

I wonder why there seem to be a lot of unappreciative people. Or is it that the people are not as appreciative as the one giving was hoping.
I don't know.

dare i say at the risk of being flamed ...lol
but imo 50% of the ppl playing gw get more kicks from flaming ppl for no reason (or very little reason) than playing the game itself.
just something you have to accept that not everyone is as mature as you would like and have to accept also the immaturity of the younger plyers who know no better...

I just keep good acts for my friend and guildies, I have been called retarded and noob so many times in the past for giving for free items to strangers.
For example, last night while doing Hell's Precipice and Abbandon's Mouth for guardian title, we were running a 8-man team from alliance. We have some good drops like: 3 elite monk tomes, 2 elite mesmer ones and 2 req9 15^50 musraat hornbows. It was awesome.
We all know what all the other is trying to get, we have been playing a lot for so long. One of us was gathering money for his monk elite armor, we give him the hornbows, so he can gets some money. He didn't want to take the elite tomes because another person of the group was working on his Elite Skill hunter title, that gladly and after some time took all the tomes, because he didn't want to take them because we can make some money of them.
I prefer making friends happy than money

Sorry...off on a tangent there.
Doing something nice for a few people really paid off for me a while back. I met some great new players and helped to kit them out and create workable builds. We've become great friends and play together quite often. They are reasonably mature though, certainly not your standard 13 year old self-obsessed newbies, which always helps.
The main obstacle to me being too nice to people in game is ArenaNet to be honest. They seem to pick on people for transferring money etc in game...and people seem to be really worried about taking items for free in case they've been "duped". I bought my new friends a Guild Hall a while back, but after giving them the money they needed for it, I was wondering if ArenaNet would pick up on that one-way transaction, and ban us both for "buying/selling gold" (which it wasn't, it was a donation from an Alliance Leader to the Leader of a newbie guild so they could feel as though they had a "home")...thankfully that one "slipped through".

Why do you think wanting to give items away is being nice? In this brave new world with BMP weapons, dirt cheap mod prices, and three years of accumulated junk, the thing with the most value to me is an empty inventory slot. Stop trying to steal that!
Rocky Raccoon
I have had both good and bad experiences with giving items away. I must say that most have been good. I find that if I ask for the first person to open trade with me works better than to PM me. 90% of the time I get a thank you and even the ones that are to late for the item also say thank you for the offer.

1. Do not have the bonus mission pack.
2. Have much better things to spend their money on than perfect weapon mods, such as Armor, decent skills, and Signets of Capture.
3. Don't know what "max damage" is.
4. Do not have 3 years of accumulated junk, since they've only been playing 2-3 weeks.
Experienced players, who have money, and have accumulated many different weapons, have no need for such freebies. Outgoing, mature newbies often seem very glad of any help they're given.
