well theres about 3 "base" games that are all stand alone, prophecies, factions, and nightfall. the only expansion is, eye of the north, which requires one of the 3.

its usually recommend that you get prophecies first, it has a better story line and the starting zone is the best of the 3.

There are 3 games and 1 addon, characters can start in any of the games you own and travel to the other games making them really one big game.

The first game out was Prophesies you get a choice of 6 character classes and the storyline is long but very good.
Its also the biggest of the games in number of main missions and probably map area, terrain towns and people resemble an alternative medieval Europe IMO.

Factions Second game same 6 character classes plus 2 more types"assassin & Ritualist", set in an asiatic land resembling China in some respects.

Nightfall came next and this introduced 2 more character classes you get the original 6 plus Parragon and Dervish.
It also introduced Heroes, customisable Ai allies to help on your missions, this land resembles north africa somewhat.

Then this year came the first addon game which requires one of the other games to play.

I like all the games so its up to you which game has features you think you would like.

You may find some areas of prophesies and even factions short on players to form parties, this is inevitable since the newer games are where more players tend to be active.
So you may have to do some missions with Ai henchemen, rather than other online players.

I would sugest buying Prophicies first.

If you like it and find your more into the PvP side over the PvE then buy Factions, if you like PvE more than PvP then buy Nightfall and GWEN. You can buy Factions for PvE too, its just not as good as the others, though it does have some excellent skills.

In the end if you like GW you will end up with all 4.

No, you can't play it offline.

For a back-up, in case your internet is down, you might want to try something like Morrowind, or some other single player RPG.

There is no offline mode for GW. If your internet connection is down for whatever reason, you can't play GW.
