Sorry, but Heroes did not kill anything. I was soloing most of GW's content in Prophecies/Factions long before Nightfall and the advent of Heroes. Moreover, when I want a group, I can usually find one -- and if I can't find a group I can always call on my Guild/Alliance to help.
Teamplay remains as an option for those who want to play that way (that's part of what a good guild is for). What Heroes meant to me is that I can more enjoyably get through most missions or dungeons alone or with just a couple of friends rather than wait around for a full group of players to form; the Hero/hench feature is one of the things that makes GW
absolutely great, imo. If you love player team-only play, I would heartily recommend an MMO like WoW to you.
As the GW population continues to thin -- both because of dissipating interest and a wider geographic spread (the player population now being spread across 3 campaigns plus 1 expansion) -- Heroes/henches (a great feature to begin with) are more critical than ever. The OP's suggestion would make a good idea even better. I would suggest that an alt only become available as a Hero in a particular campaign if both the main and the alt(s) have beaten that campaign.
