Can somebody explain to me the whole concept of armor and how you can "upgrade" it?

You can buy insignias and runes from the rune trader, salvage your own from armors you find or buy them from other players. Then you simply double-click them and add them your to armor.

The upgrading that other posters have mentioned above means junking your current armor(after expert salvaging any runes/insignias/materials you want to save) and buying an entirely new set with a higher armor lvl.

1. kill monsters, sell the loot
2. buy low , sell high - do frequent price check.
3. run missions once you're good enuf (i made fortune running master for Nahpui Q mission)

basically no.1 is where a newbie should start.

In regards to Rexion's post.

Do Not Skip Max Level Armor. Once you get a chance to craft a 1k armor (Droknar's Forge, Kaineng Center, Sunspear Sanc.) Get a set. THEN, you can start saving up for the 10k-15k Elite sets.

You'll be hurting yourself by only using non-max armors as you will simple get killed in 1-2 hits in the level 20 areas, not to mention piss off your monks / wasting their energy that will result to a mission failure.

Do it for fun (and let others know) but don't skip max level armor just to save money for 15k's. That's just bad PvE'ing. Get at least one of the 1k sets for max armor level, then start saving gold.

actually, i just hit realm of torment in my AL 15 armor, thank you very much.

EDIT:
I monk, as you can see. I really don't care if someone dies. They just have to wait till the battle is over till the battle is over to get a res. Most monks go by this. If you are a monk that gets mad when someone dies, I'd advise anger therapy because getting mad over someone dying isn't that big of a deal
If H/Hing with AL 15 armor, then you just let your party go ahead of you.

If you play your first char, then buy max armor ASAP.

I think the guy was referring to the extra healing that you have to do to someone with low level armor. Depending upon how things are going, your energy level, etc., it can be annoying if you have to keep draining your energy to heal someone who's too cheap/careless to get the max armor they can. In fact, the best thing to do is just let them die - except that just encourages leeching.
(And, no, I'm not referring to characters who are simply low level and don't have max armor yet)
