Hello everyone.
I don't know if there is another topic on this, but I was thinking about all the misconceptions I had of Guild Wars before I started playing it.
I was wondering if anyone else had some too!

Here's some of mine. I'm glad I bought it though! I was so wrong.

1. When I heard that the game was instanced and players would meet up in an outpost, I pictured 1 outpost in the game and a bunch of explorable areas attached to it.

2. When I found out the cap was level 20 and that PvP started at lvl 20, I thought that the game was incredibly small and that once you hit level 20, only then could you PvP and it would get dull fast.

3. When I heard the game had henchmen in PvP to help, I thought "no way is a game dev going to do that! I wonder how much they will cost an hour to use?". I honestly thought you had to pay them and keep paying them to stay.

4. When I read that you could only have 8 skills on your bar I thought the PvP fights would be really shallow and the PvE zones would be really small because how on earth could 8 skills be enough to keep someone interested for long.

5. When I heard people talking about 15k armor and dyes on some forums, I thought that was the whole endgame once they hit level 20. Remember I still thought the game had 1 outpost and a bunch of areas attached to it. I thought you'd be level 20 after you finished all those areas, so there would be no more areas to explore for the endgame.

Pretty ignorant of me, but I wonder if I wasn't alone. If there are people out there who've never played Guild Wars and think the game is like that too.

When I started playing, I thought the Pre-searing is all the game has.
Of course I was freaked out when I saw the whole Tyria.

Not too much of a misconception, but still...

I thought I can get Cynn's armor too.

I thought you could explore the entire world map. I wanted to run south to the Crystal Desert from Ascalon, but the river in Regent Valley blocked my way...

I also thought I could transfer items between my characters in Pre-Searing, hence the 'i' in my warrior's name - Symeon was deleted. Still slightly confuses me when I think about it.

yea, I thought you had to give henchmen money before they agreed to join you.

I thought pre-searing was the whole game lol

I thought you could fight people in towns - was quite annoyed that my weapons kept disappearing even though i had them equipped.

Thought the catacombs was the underworld
Lol - "I cleared out the underworld"
"WTF, YOU'RE THERE ALREADY?"
"yea its in pre-sear"
"OMG U NOOB"

prolly alot more but yeah...

I thought at first than in LA, you would be able to go on the ships and wait till they go off. I waited for 10 hours while going Afk, only managed to have my GW Client in the end.
I guess I can't trust the Shipwrights anymore, they don't seem to build their boats properly. Dontz take the Shipz in LAz!=D!

Well, at the time I started Prophecies, I'd been playing nothing but Morrowind for like two months.

Sooo....a lot of stuff threw me off at first.
-limited to 1.5 professions

-only 8 skills available in the field

-being REQUIRED to play with other humans at some points in the game.

-not having the ability to potentially do everything with a single character (tank AND heal AND nuke AND MM AND....)

-saw that I could have henchmen, and I thought I'd get all the loot and 100% of the money that dropped (I mean hey, they're just NPCs, right?)

-not being able to explore the WHOLE world map, and many times being forced to follow a set path intead of heading overland.

When I started I didn't understand the concept of changing secondary proffesions, so after my war/ranger was lvl 20 I made a war/monk. It wasn't till I felt like deleting the war/ranger that I tried to change his secondary proff and finally understood that you didn't lose all skills learned or pets tamed.

I also had the impression that to find your way to the Hall of Heros you had to locate a secret entrance in the desert, like right in the middle of an instanced map. For a long time I though that the funny looking mounds in the Arid Sea were the entrances, and that I couldn't get inside till I ascended.

My biggest misconception about GW (before ever playing it) was that it was a "groups-only" game and that you couldn't really solo it if you wanted.

I started with Factions during a preview trial and was just ... stunned ... by the presence of the henches standing there by the gate in Shing Jea Monestery waiting to help out.

Though I like many, many things about GW, that was the point I "became a convert".

Well, kinda just two expectations i had, and which shocked me when i learnt the truth:

Leveling up, knowing the cap was 20.. i thought it would take ages. How wrong i was

I always used to wallhug to make sure i got all the areas and outposts explored - even in my noob days. The first campaign i played was factions. I got about halfway through both the luxon and kurzick areas and looked at the map. I'd revealed maybe.. 20% of the whole thing. And had 70% on my title. I soon realised 100% of the actual map wasn't explorable

I was a little confused about the runes and how they worked, but not as confused as a guildie who, soon after joining post searing Ascalon promptly bought five minor vigor runes and stuck them on thier armour, thinking that they would stack .
My guildmates were talking a lot about ectos and shards, and i thought i was the unluckiest person in the game for not having one drop in in post searing Ascalon......

I thought there was only one elite skill per profession, then switched to "one by attribute". I had quite a shock with Factions update...

I remember shortly after I got to post, at the first sign of snow... I ran back to Ascalon to buy the Fur Armor for my ranger, I thought the snow and cold would make her sick and somehow lose health. I was so happy with my warm armor... until it all clicked, and well... ummm...

I had a couple of preconceptions / misconceptions:

I thought you'd be able buy weapons and armor at the Merchant. LOL.

I thought your "quest log" would keep record of completed quests. Heh.

I thought you'd have to pay for henchmen. I quickly learned why they're free.

Can't raise skeletons? Awww.

I quickly got over all of it as the game blew me away.

I thought before i bought Prophicies when it was first released that it would be similar to Diablo but in 3d. Alot of people from Blizzard came over to make this game. So my thoughts were that it was going to be more of a weapon based game than a skill based game. Boy i was wrong. This game is all about equiping and spamming the right skills over and over. Weapons are totally just about skin almost in this game. A lot of mods on weapons even pertain to skills and casting. Even when you are a warrior, all you do is spam skills over and over. I was kinda let down on the idea, but got used to it. I actually prefer to have uber and rare equipment. And i actually like to think my sword causes damage to enemies and not my skills.

I spent my first week running around Pre Searing, and Old Ascalon trying to figure out how to get my lvl 4-5 to NF to start the newest campaign.

Oddly, when I asked others, they didn't know either.

(Hi Xander!)

When I first started, I thought I was screwed because I was level 1 and couldn't kill the River Skale outside presearing Ascalon.

I thought presearing was all there was to the game

I wondered why my character (female warrior) couldn't breakdance like a male ranger so I tried putting "/breakdance" into the chat...

I wondered if everyone's armor was supposed to be shiny and colorless. That came from playing my first day of Guild Wars on a pentium 3 laptop that barely matched the minimum requirements for GW.

I asked "Where are the henchmen? The guide book said you could team with them" in presearing.

I thought I could get the awesome armor NPCs had, and that rangers wielded shortswords/knives. I don't know where I saw the pic that gave me that idea.

Only misconception I had about the game before I bought it was that it was a PvP only game. I was really skeptical about what PvE meant in this game.

I bought Prophecies and was sold the moment I made my Mesmer. Next day I went out to pick up Factions and Nightfall.

It's funny, I thought when I first started out that where I was, was only a tutorial of sorts, like a way to get acquainted with your character. I knew that there would be more...I just didn't expect the whole "Searing" event to happen. I was kinda sad because everything was so pretty and then poof it was all gone

Some misconceptions I had when I did start getting into playing it...I thought I could still solo after the Pre Searing area... I also didn't understand the concept of the missions and that there was a linear story line. At one point I spent nearly 7 hours trying to get through the Diessa Lowlands so I could get to Nolani Academy from Piken Square. At level 8 with Henchman. Yes I know...it was absolute hell.

I remember before buying GW I thought it was going be more "Diabloesque", so when I started playing I clicked my mouse button like there was no tomorrow on pre searing (until I got the little message that said that it was not needed to click like crazy).

I had some misconceptions:

- Fist of all i thought pre searing was ALL the game
- I thought that pre-seraing collector armor was the only armor i could get besides the starting one.
- Then when i got out of pre searing, i thought that i wouldn't get less loot by having henchmen, and i just learned that when i was in half of nightfall that a guildie explained to me.
Lol: ''omg in going IDS farming'' *with a bad build i grab henchies and go* then i wondered why did i got anything but lots of deaths.
- (even when i got out of pre searing) I thought i could solo the whole game, so then in old ascalon i wondered why i was always pwned by devourers and gargoyles.

I had pictured it being a LOT more Diabloesque, just in 3D, based on some early reviews I read when it launched. Since I'd played the bejesus out of D2, I didn't really want more of that.

More than two years after it's launch I picked it up on an impulse thinking, "I've seen this damn game in Target and Wal-Mart consistently since it's launch". I still wasn't sure exactly what it was but I figured two plus years of prominent retail exposure meant it had to be at least good. That, and I was fighting the urge to start up my WoW account again

So I was very pleased to discover a game that combined the best of WoW & Diablo with a kickass console action feel yet is still different than any one thing it's similar to or inspired by.

I thought it'd be like WoW's version of soloing rather than "solo with hench".

When I heard that PvP and PvE were fully separated and that you could go solo or with other players, I assumed that there was a "Single Player Mode", a "Multiplayer Mode" and a "PvP Mode".

When I got to post, I didn't know you could transfer money between characters, so I ended up deleting my Wammo with like 8k (and this was in Ascalon, so that was a lot of money).

When I first saw an "Rt/E" I assumed that "Rt" was short for some kind of "subclass" for Rangers, and I PMed the person asking how you could become an "Rt". I never got a reply.

I thought the community was better then the 95% crap it is.

Other than that I didn't really care about much of what was in the game and got it for kicks and giggles, like I do most games.

I remembered something.
I thought you'd only get skills when you leveled up and stopped getting skills at 20.
I heard you could pick a secondary profession, but didn't have to right away.
I thought that would be bad, because if someone waited to pick their secondary they would hardly get any skills from it before they reached 20.

Yeah, I really wasn't sure I wanted to buy it based on how I was picturing it. Maybe it was because of the other games I'd played before it that made me think all these things.
