I was in LA dis 10 euro, there was terrible lag. but I got my hat and 3 presents before I was "lagged out" of the game
After a few attempts (about 15 minutes) I was able to login again.

When I logged on I saw that I lost my hat, the presents and also saw that what I salvaged was back on my invent.
Reading the forums I also saw other people having the same experience. Others managed to get their hats and presents though.

now my questions?
-was this a rollback?
-can ANet do a rollback on servers/individuals?
If ANet can only do a rollback on everyone will the ones that got their presents and hats lose theirs after they restart gw again?

wanted rollback -> anet restores a backup point, basicly moving the time in the game backwards for anyone. happened after a serious economy issue in 2006

unwanted rollback (as today) -> one or more servers do crash without saving players progresses, players are kicked out (err7) because the server is down and when they log back in they find themselves in the same situation they were before the server crashed. (in this case loosing 40 minutes of gameplay)

ic so only those that got kicked from the game have lost their progress, so its not a rollback then. It's just a case of not saving in harddrive so to speak, like when you are writing a paper on Word or something and forgot to save.

It may well be that servers were unable to save state, due to insane load increase and network lag. I hope Anet will correct this for the next events and also compensate for the loss. (I didn't loose anything)

I doubt there will be any compensation since there are still 7 more events to go. There is tonnes of time for people to get their hats again. From what I have seen, it has only affected a small number of people. I survived both lag spikes without issue.

The more reason to compensate them then! Which is good, because it would make (almost) everyone happy (again) on New Year's Day.

so at this point if you have both hats, it would be a better bet to trade in your shards now, or gamble and lose them if this happens again.

How is it unprofessional if there is a unforeseeable technical problem and data is lost? It's the downside in a technological world. Things go wrong sometimes. It can't be helped, and it certainly isn't unprofessional.

You lost a hat. At this point, there are 7 more events in which you can get your hat back. There's no need to get all immature and start putting blame where it doesn't belong.

on a plus to all this, i have bought hats for my other characters than the one that went to the event, bugged? don't know, 10g per hat x2 for each toon, is better than sitting through the event.

Part of the problem is the 1000's of afk people not picking up there winterday gifts, these gifts drive up the lag to an impossible amout.

I for one would suggest that during such events players are forced to participate in a method that would remove the ability to AFK and still aquire your hat/gifts.

Another option would be to decrease the time needed for items to become avialible for all people in the district, ie youve got 2min to pickup your gift or it becomes a free for all.

There is always lag during events (and disconnects), Arena Net knows this but doesn't seem to do anything to solve it.

Or they can put gifts directly into your inventory at the end, the way they do when the ring you're standing on is the winner.

I'd say no to a shorter assignment period because some people are TRYING to get their gifts, but can't because of lag caused by everyone else's. I know it took me more than 2 min to pick mine up in LA this morning.

This is serious? If it's a rollback then why hasn't it been mentioned on the Wiki or Guildwars.com?

PlayNC will be performing routine server maintenance during the time periods listed below. During this time, players may be unable to access the Guild Wars In-game Store, the reporting system, and account management pages.

Planned Start: Monday 12/31/2007 3:50 pm PDT (6:50 pm EDT; 11:50 pm GMT)
Planned Finish: Monday 12/31/2007 4:10 pm PDT (7:10 pm EDT; 12:10 am GMT)
Impact Duration: 20 minutes
Maintenance are very different. I'm glad I didn't play the game in a while.

Is this because of the "zone-anywhere glitch?" I didn't think they'd think it was that big of a problem.

edit: Hey wait a minute.. when did they do this? Yesterday? Today? I have a character I made some time yesterday which I still have.

they can not change individual accounts therefore they can not do this moronic compensation idea some people get
