what is a rollback?
yishin
I was in LA dis 10 euro, there was terrible lag. but I got my hat and 3 presents before I was "lagged out" of the game
After a few attempts (about 15 minutes) I was able to login again.
When I logged on I saw that I lost my hat, the presents and also saw that what I salvaged was back on my invent.
Reading the forums I also saw other people having the same experience. Others managed to get their hats and presents though.
now my questions?
-was this a rollback?
-can ANet do a rollback on servers/individuals?
If ANet can only do a rollback on everyone will the ones that got their presents and hats lose theirs after they restart gw again?

wanted rollback -> anet restores a backup point, basicly moving the time in the game backwards for anyone. happened after a serious economy issue in 2006
unwanted rollback (as today) -> one or more servers do crash without saving players progresses, players are kicked out (err7) because the server is down and when they log back in they find themselves in the same situation they were before the server crashed. (in this case loosing 40 minutes of gameplay)

I doubt there will be any compensation since there are still 7 more events to go. There is tonnes of time for people to get their hats again. From what I have seen, it has only affected a small number of people. I survived both lag spikes without issue.

so at this point if you have both hats, it would be a better bet to trade in your shards now, or gamble and lose them if this happens again.

nice i lost my hat, Anet is being so professional.

You lost a hat. At this point, there are 7 more events in which you can get your hat back. There's no need to get all immature and start putting blame where it doesn't belong.
pfaile
on a plus to all this, i have bought hats for my other characters than the one that went to the event, bugged? don't know, 10g per hat x2 for each toon, is better than sitting through the event.

Part of the problem is the 1000's of afk people not picking up there winterday gifts, these gifts drive up the lag to an impossible amout.
I for one would suggest that during such events players are forced to participate in a method that would remove the ability to AFK and still aquire your hat/gifts.
Another option would be to decrease the time needed for items to become avialible for all people in the district, ie youve got 2min to pickup your gift or it becomes a free for all.

I'd say no to a shorter assignment period because some people are TRYING to get their gifts, but can't because of lag caused by everyone else's. I know it took me more than 2 min to pick mine up in LA this morning.

This is serious? If it's a rollback then why hasn't it been mentioned on the Wiki or Guildwars.com?

Maintenance are very different. I'm glad I didn't play the game in a while.
Is this because of the "zone-anywhere glitch?" I didn't think they'd think it was that big of a problem.
edit: Hey wait a minute.. when did they do this? Yesterday? Today? I have a character I made some time yesterday which I still have.

I dont think its the afkers that are causing it.....at the 2nd event this morning (6am est) we had LOADS of afkers in the district I was in....and NO LAG AT ALL.
yet at the 3rd one, where there was only a handful of afkers in our district we had insane lag and only 1/3 the amount of people in the district at that time....
no idea about what's going on, however, it doesnt paint a good picture for gw future.

Boring, these things happen, last year I missed all hats due to the lag. Live with it or stop playing and free some bandwidth, I'm still having fun in guild wars so I'm still playing it. Keep those hats unique, if not a.net should also start remaking all the hats from the festivals, the collectors editions glows and so on.
They are a gift to us the community, so yeah sometimes it goes wrong, but they are a bonus anyway.
So start playing the game and log off from this board, I'll do the same
Have fun, thats priceless.

If the servers were unable to save state, then there's no way for them to know who lost what, therefore there's no way to fairly compensate.

Is it true that back in the early days of guild wars there was a server roll back and the material prices were reset because someone in my guild said there was and got 1000s of ectos at 100g each.
Aerian_Skybane
I didn't have a single issue with lag during the entire event, even at peak times. I am quite sure ISP is to blame for most lag experienced. As for the OP, this can occur when both your ISP and Anet's glitch together, causing you to still be able to play while they continually try to handshake, and then when they ultimately fail, you drop for good, but everything you did since last move (I believe GW saves your status everytime you go through a portal or map travel, and when you exit) is gone since the state was never recorded since the last save. Therefore, if you spent time in one zone for three hours, and the server communication failed during the last hour, you would lose all your progress from the three hours. It happened to me when I was in college a couple times due to high server overload on both my colleges server (more common) and ANets (less common).
It sucks but luckily there is more than one event, and could be salvaged. Its a risk and disadvantage of playing an online game. If it were an off-line game, your hardware could die on you at any moment. Same thing.

No lag problems.
Been away since last Thursday
Best way to avoid the holiday lag.
No hat again this year.

Regardless of whether or not anyone thinks it creates lag, AFKers probably do. Tons of them attached to the server, gifts spawning for them and then just sitting there until the timer runs out and picks them up. It makes it annoying for other players who have to keep trying for a high numbered district because the others are full of AFKers.
Either show up for the event (that is every 3 RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing hours) or quit crying and go without.
Read the second quoted paragraph. It was done a long time ago, March 13th, 2006.

Not so much 'read it anywhere' as 'experienced it' if you were here when that took place, Fril, it was an old rollback. I was here at the time, so I remember. It's possible there are old threads around that discuss what went on, but couldn't find it at the moment.
For this year's Wintersday Finale, mostly all the people in our district complained of lagg or being 'stuck'. It took forever to get to the present you were picking up, which prompted someone to say that GW was crashing due to the servers not being able to handle everyone's simultaneous pick-up of a present. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but seems reasonable.
Also, I read in another thread that someone posted a GW update regarding festival hats:

Wintersday 2007 Hats Here's a special opportunity to get this year's Wintersday hats! Simply log into Guild Wars, visit a Festival Hat NPC, and ask him to make you either or both of the 2007 hats: the Wreath Crown and the Ice Crown. Once you've done that, the Festival Hat NPC will record your new possessions, and you can retrieve your crowns at any time. You can take advantage of this offer through Noon Pacific (-8 GMT) on Tuesday, January 8, 2008. |
