Hidden Caltrops
horseradish
I'm having fun on my assassin, and I have a tendency to plan ahead on what I want to do with him.
Although Moebius-Blossom spamming is, basically, the most effective combo an Assassin can do in PvE, and Shadow Prison, the best in PvP, I'd like to do something alternative.
For instance, I'll play a traditional ranger, but I prefer trapping....even in nm PvE.
So, i've decided to have Aura of Displacement. It's a classic skill that works offensively and defensively. I like it.
I came upon Hidden Caltrops. It looks alright for Alliance Battles and such, but before I spend money on a tomb or cap sig, I would like the general opinion of this particular skill.
I have no experience with Hidden Caltrops, only my prejudgments. I wouldn't use this skill in PvE of course, only certain forms of PvP.
It seems useful for someone running away, but it is also a pretty conditional snare.
What do you guys think of this skill?

Its pretty good, although your going to PROBABLY need to have a ranged wep like wand or something, just so you can activate it while running. Because if you dont, then well your gonna run up to your enemy and he might have a cripple too
Smilin' Assassin
.. on an all-Sin bar: try it with [skill]Disrupting Dagger[/skill] ~ if he's running you've nailed him ~ if he's stopped to use a skill, gotim anyway :}

Well, now that I think about it, [skill]Crippling Dagger[/skill] is a good snare as well, but I have no points to spare for that one skill. The unconditional damage, interruption, and snare is good utility as well.
I suppose I don't have to be the one to cause damage to cause the hex to end, correct?

Ive tried some things with it, but the conditional part could always mess up a combo >.<

I'm sure it would, and using a lead attack such as [skill]Black Spider Strike[/skill] would be redundant.
Zhang Zyria
If you're not relying on the elite for skills such as Black Spider Strike, try using Shameful Fear.
This skill would also seem more effective if using it with a bow/spear.

No... That skill is garbage compared to [skill]siphon speed[/skill].

Ah yes, I forgot about that, but Siphon Speed is in the same boat as Crippling Dagger in my skill bar. :/
Anyways, would there be any good attack combo that will mesh with Hidden Caltrops?
I figure that since my elite skill is a snare, that I would bring shutdown skills, or maybe condition pressure. I'm not sure about which road to tread.

Good attack combo's, meh. Spending an Elite on a conditional snare seems iffy to begin with.
X Cytherea X
just dont use it

Use a better elite. But you could be like me and just cap all sin elites and play around with them in RA. I would rather use shattering assault in conjunction with mark of instability and falling lotus strike.

I must agree that Hidden Caltrops is not the best elite skill. It would see more play otherwise. The skill caught my eye, and I figured that it could be useful in terms of PvP.
Would anyone know if the hex ends if the foe is attacked standing still? I suppose the hex wouldn't end, but I don't know if such an anomaly exists.

if they are moving and it ends it will take effect if there not moving nonthing happens. anyways i got a really good hidden caltrops build off of pvx wiki (flame shields on) so yea

While it is far from being the best combo, this combo has a little bit of synergy.

[skill]Hidden Caltrops[/skill][skill]Black Mantis Thrust[/skill][skill]Jungle Strike[/skill] Doesn't BMT contradict the cripple from Hidden Caltrops? Wouldn't Unsuspecting Strike be a better choice?

Well...with that combo, they are crippled in any scenario.
If they are moving, they take HC damage, BMT damage, and are crippled.
If they are standing still, they take BMT damage, and are crippled
With Unsuspecting, they have to be moving when you hit them to get the cripple.

If they are standing still, they only take Unsuspecting damage

HC is a garbage skill anyway they should redo the skill to "For 20 seconds, the next time target foe takes damage they take 15..63..79 damage and crippled for 5..17..21" to make it alright.
They could possibly lower the damage and cripple to like 10..25..40 and 5..10..17 and keep the recharge as it is to make it seem not OP but it really would be. lol

Yeah....I know.

So the moral of the story is: can't make a good combo with a crap Elite?
Draginvry
I still wouldn't use HC with BMT. If they are hexed, they will be crippled anyway. That is a huge waste of an elite when you can just throw any random utility hex from a necro secondary and be more effective. The only thing you'd be losing is the conditional damage from HC which only triggers if they are hit while moving. That damage is hardly worth wasting your elite on.

No...because then if they were moving you would need to find something to hit them with since Shameful Fear wouldn't trigger HC.
