I'm new to the game, have gotten one character to 20 (W/Mo), and really like the idea of the survivor title, and would like my survivor to be a monk. I may be additionally handicapped because at this point I only own Prophecies.
Perhaps I should mention I've been called a glutton for punishment; I'm one of the crackpots who enjoyed hardcore in Diablo 2...
I'm not in a guild, and won't join one unless I find some cool people who are in one, so don't count on organized Survivor play. I'm also not a rude bastard, so I won't be selling out other people at the first sign of trouble. So... I'll probably be playing by myself. As such, I'm trying to put together a low-farm build. I need to be able to work my own way to Lion's Arch, Droknar's Forge, and further.
The build I've been liking so far has been Mo/E (the so-called protector). I've seen troll farming done by Mo/E's and it seems to be very effective if you can lay the smack-down before they build up enough adrenaline to interrupt everything you do. In addition, I would think a protector would be an ideal character for a more novice player; I should have more time to see the situation going south, and be able to save/exit.
The thing that worries me is actually being able to get through all the missions. A Mo/E seems like a later-game build. The Mo/W build that Scaphism posted in 'Monk Basics' seems a very hardy build, if anything. I am also more familiar with warrior skills than elementalist skills.
Items probably won't be an issue. I'm reputably very good at trading and have gotten everything I really need to make my W/Mo happy (though not the most desirable skins, perhaps), and anticipate being able to do so for this character.
So, what's a person to do while relying on, or at least working with, npcs? Should I go Mo/W until Ascension then switch to Mo/E to grind out the last levels? Is it irrevocably hopeless?
P.S.
I'm sorry if this is a very generic question. I've tried to do some learning on this forum before asking, but I lack some of the sight necessary to see what about certain builds is the key to their functioning. Many people simply post eight skills and assume they speak for themselves. Feel free to post an answer if you feel like it. If not, I'm sorry for wasting the two minutes it took you to read this.
So, I'm new. (Question about Mo/xx Survivor)

I got my survivor on my monk by capping elites but I used the help of heroes (and they are a lot better then ordinary henchman or most PuGs) and I waited with doing certain missions till I got my legend survivor since I learned from experience that you have a High chance of death in those. You also can't farm the experience since you'll need heroes for that. The best would be to unlock the skills you want to use in PvP, cap all elites you can find and know what monsters you're dealing with. (and practice the use of F12 - enter )
as a secondary I would chose a mesmer or an ele, mesmers mantras can help a lot and the ele earth line also reduces dmg, both classes provide energy management.

You can do it with any class but if you want to farm it the read up on farming builds, but remember every troll has his day and it can happen that you get disrupted at a crit moment. I tried to 55 farm a spot for the title once and died do to lag. So much money wasted in scrolls makes me cry
Personnally I would run with a crew of henchmen and play the game rather then farm. Go for elites 5k a pop they also have douple exp weekends now and then.
I am also working on survivor on my monk but I am running a Earth prayers dervish build Can't pass up all that regeneration.
Many will say buy EOTN and Punch your way to the title since unless you are really bad you can not die.
Good luck to you
And if you see a monk running around with a scythe its more than likely me

Thanks for the advice, guys. I went ahead and bought Factions so I could do some of the 3000+ xp quests in Cantha. I also decided to go Elementalist. Currently still pre-searing at lvl 4. Fire magic is deadly right off the bat, too, which is really handy.

btw when you get to the pvp part to go Post searing, log out so you don't get killed by the other team. when you log back in you get to the part where you're with Rurik.

He won't have to he bought Factions a word of advice don't PuG and if you can afford it get the last mission ran for you on Sing Jea as well get to Kamaden and grap heros as soon as you can. When you do the quest Sunspears in Cantha let the henchies do it for you and stay back and call targets.Don't forget about your G button go to Guild Hall if things start to go bad or log out.

I've tried survivor 5 times with 5 different classes, the last being a warrior who after 40 hours died at 500k exp Anyway, capping elites at the same time is definately the best way to go, plus you'll be getting 2 titles at the same time! If and when u get NF, be careful in Barbarous Shores, particularly with the huge mob that surrounds that Captain Medeh dervish a-hole lol! What, me bitter? no, not at all....Imo, warrior was the best class to try survivor on, although derv was fun, too...especially at the low levels if u set up max armor (insignias/runes) at level 3 and good weapons, its like buttah!
Btw: gl to u!

Update: Vel The Everlasting is now lvl 17, 70% of the way to his next level (112,153 xp). /deaths at zero.
Had to restart at lvl 7 twice, was running through ascalon and got pegged in areas too high for me.
Try no. 3 started in Cantha, most xp has been gained through quests. I have opted to f12+c one time, while soloing. Have not run from a fight while partied with people.
I still don't know Cantha very well, apparently I have to find Kaineng.
Wish me luck :-)

Dead. 121,537 xp. Damnable Afflicted in Kaineng.

If you decide to do this again with a monk, use a Holy Haste and Light of Deliverance build and use the hero/hench flags to send your allies into battle ahead of you. Just sit back and spam LoD and let the henchies take care of stuff.

just know where to go
start in cantha (quick xp start) or elona -> elona for heroes -> tyria for ascention 50.000 xp boost capture all the elites you can and don't do the dragons lair, unwaking waters, hidden city of adhashim/ gate of desolation since there is a increased chance of death in those missi's for unexperienced players (learned the hard way ) or cuz you can't heal properly since ur a wurm
or ofc, you could try one of the experience farms in the farming topic.
jade brotherhood
whiptail devourer
frost wurm
Kilroy's dungeon
are known, "save" HM xp farms to me
just remember that monks are backline, so stay there! don't go Mo/A dagger

Well, if I'm going to restart, I'm going to have to weigh whether or not I want Mo to be primary class again. I found myself wishing multiple times that I had the Energy Storage attribute. It seems far more effective than Divine Favor, ironically. If I go monk primary again, which I enjoy, I'll probably go Mesmer secondary. I've never played a mesmer and understand they have great energy management skills.

Don't bother healing or protecting the hero/hench go with smiting and just protect ad heal youself.
