Computer Freezing Problem only during GW
Allanon Knight
My comp keeps freezing for some rason only when i play GW. I have tons of memory left and this doesnt happen with other games. Is it just that my computer is being retarded or is this propblem happening to other people? PLease respond : ) i need help

My computer was doing this a while back, just started doing it out of no where considering I've spend easily 100+ hours on GW since my upgrade and it hadn't froze once.
Started doing it a few weeks ago, all seems well now since I did a -image and everything, no idea if it was related but it seemed to solve the problem for me.

Dual core processors by any chance? Try setting the affinity of Gw.exe to one core, using the task manager. Right click the process, go to Affinity, uncheck one tickbox.

If you are using nvidia graphics and windows vista revert to forceware 162.22 or disable AA to stop crashes. There is a known vista nvidia driver issue with aa. 162.22 works with 4x aa fine.

Sorry for reviving such an old thread, but this same thing is currently happening to me. I've been playing GW without any kind of errors for 3 years now, and I have recently upgraded my pc. It was after the upgrades that the whole pc began to freeze when I play gw.
I have MSI x48c Platinum, Intel Core 2 Quad, GeForce 9800 GTX, 4 gb DDR3 RAM.
I still haven't gone over to Windows Vista, so I have Win XP. Did send email to the tech support in NC with a DxDiag and a full report created by EVEREST.
Perhaps I should try to set the affinity down for gw?

Sure, give it a shot. Multi core processors are an odd beast when it comes to Guild Wars. On some systems (like mine) GW will happily run with all 4 cores humming. On others, affinity to a single core needs to be set.
Brianna
Yep.. on XP I have to set it to 1 core, on Vista it works fine on 2 cores. It's just something about XP that I haven't updated that is causing the problem.
Syrax
BAH. OK, computer froze while I was changing affinity...

Download Forcecore - http://www.kalme.de/index.php?option...44&Itemi d=35
That will set things so that GW will only run with one core, saving you from manually setting the affinity (even if you could ^^)

Hmm, weird. I used Forcecore to run GW and it seem to be working. This is really strange. :S

Vista is built on the premise that multicore solutions would be used. Vista can effectively manage up to 16 cores. XP cannot. The cores will literally fight over which thread to process, causing a run error (freeze)
Syrax
Aha. Okay. Perhaps it is time for me to update to Windows Vista Ultimate then.

I think someone here posted some sort of hot fix that I'd have to go dig up in an old thread I made, but It's no biggie really.

the hotfix for XP should have been in one of the Servicepacks put out by MS and otherwhise the hotfix has been available for download on their site for ages (since dual cores came out) i just got to dig up which KB and number it is and if running an amd use the amd dual core optimizer tool which is available from the amd site (i'll provide links later getting too sleepy atm)
but indeed vista was made in mind with dual, quad core or more, and after installing sp1 for vista it runs great

But seriously grats on the convertion, I think you will find that vista is a great os.

Lol zamial i run 3 os'es normally
Vista (we'll have to convert when they ditch support for XP)
Ubuntu(Linux for doing my coding (php and alot of others c# for example)
And xp for general gaming
I'm not a huge fan of vista but most problems with vista are sadly resolved around bad drivers (creative is the first coming to my mind)

*Fiddles all the sarcasm meters* Oh hi, I'm upgrading the meters.
Jk! I really need to dust off XP, but I have a lot of new files and things to transfer over, been many months since I've used it. I also have to do some customizing to it as well since it has fallen behind on that too.

I really need to stop skimming through posts. Brianna brought it to my attention you were being sarcastic. I feel really dumb now, doh.
Brianna
Lol it's ok, it happens.

Remember Windows ME? That was the last real bad OS Microsoft released.
That was really bad. Really, really bad. B.A.D. If ME had been their first product, Bill Gates would still be flipping burgers.

I still think Vista is fine. I guess experiences vary though.

lol I had no problems with any of them including ME. Damn novice window users Though I am missing my new machine lately since I fizzled out 2 powersupplies that has Vista 32 on it.
