I have been trying to get Nandet's recurve bow for a couple of days. My problem is if I bring too many heroes/henchies my chances drop, and with too few characters I get my but kicked by him. What characters, and skills are most effective?

I would try a Assasin green farmer, or a 55 sv necro, or a mo/e sliver armor monk Ele green farmers work too.

Bring the henchies/heroes and try not to bring too many AoE skills
clear all mobs except the boss, flag away the henchies untill they are greyed out (just out of rader range)
now you can solo the boss

Nandet's skills:

Glass Arrows (elite)
Lightning Reflexes
Splinter Shot
Troll Unguent
Zojun's Shot

Best try would be a 55 hp SV/SS. 130 HP dervish, Me/N with signet of midnight and price of failure or just something else that can kill him

seeing as you are a ranger, you may want to try a toucher. Bring alot of blocking stances tho

you can also bring a second hero trapper with a speed boost to lay some extra traps and just send him out of the radar within the 90 secs

The best way to farm a ranger boss is to stand behind a tree/obstruction. Price of failure and empathy will kill them in seconds.

You could just clear all surrounding enemies, and then when boss is alone flag the heros off of radar somewheres... to the point where their names are dimmed. Then use a Touch Ranger build to kill him off, I am sure that it should have no problems killing him. And flagging heros off of radar helps drop rates for greens, similar to soloing.
