Exploits encountered through the Years
Ouchie
Ok today's big news about the 117 being banned brings up some memories for me about other exploits we heard about over the years.
So I thought I'd see which ones we all remember and what action (if any) was taken in each case.
I vaguely remember a guild loosing its place in GvG because of an exploit.
There was the whole Sunspear/Lightbring points and afk farming and not killing monks so they rez mobs
The Shrines for afk farming had their NPC taken away so no blessings and the mobs were changed to only count as points for the first time you kill them, but no action was taken against users of the exploit.
Any others?

There was an exploit which gave reputation points for primary EotN quests that allowed people to get rank10 Delver in half an hour.

Lulz. They weren't, which is why you can still see 2000+ armbrace bids. A few people got banned, but obviously not everyone involved.
Coridan
well there was the hack/exploit what ever that a person could gain GM level status in the Game...and disconnect others etc..

I think the first exploit I heard of was the one where you get get multiple 50K XP for killing the doppleganger
It was'nt really an exploit, but the bug I saw that was the most fun was the one in which henchies dropped gold when they died, and every monster was hostile to another. So all you needed to do was drag two mobs together, watch them fight and pick up the spoils.

Just a few that actually 'surfaced':
-map traveling anywhere on map
-storage in pre-searing
-disconnecting everyone in instance

What exactly is Anet's definition for an exploit? For example, if I'm exploring and I just happen to run into a pile of say, 100 ectos, and they obviously shouldn't be there, I can't really get in trouble for picking them up, since that's an error on Anet's part and I didn't actually do anything wrong. However, if I actually find a true hack, then that's obviously a bannable offense.
I don't know how those 117 people were able to find that secret room - did they physically hack something, or did they just run through an invisible wall or whatever?
I didn't really agree with the banning of a bunch of people who supposedly 'knowingly' bought duplicated items for cheap. I don't really see what they did wrong..they wanted an item, had no proof that it was duplicated, and bought it, with their earned money. One of the reasons that Microsoft doesn't automatically sue or kick off anyone with bootleg software, is because it's not always the consumer's fault.

Um...wouldn't you know that if you've never seen that many drop in the game, In one spot...and the area you were in...DO NOT to touch it, and report it IMMEDIATLEY to ANet?(sp)
Surely you know prices..(even from the merch) of such a 'rare' crafting materials...(look on trading forums for high end sales) that ectoes are used as currency.
Not a valid argument .."I didn't know better" lordy lordy.

There are two free chests (not really chests) in Nightfall that say "Do not touch!"
If I touch them will I get banned?

How about the afk lightbringer points farming exploit that allowed you to get LB points for killing rezzed monsters. Was so jealous when I saw r8 LB's in DoA a few days after it opened. By the time I found out about the exploit, it had been fixed.
Would I have taken advantage of it ... probably since they weren't hell bent on banning like they are now.

[*]the Doppleganger used to drop rare items everytime you beat him/her in bonus time...many people used this to unlock items fast (before Balthazar faction was implemented. i probably merched many unconditional items during that time)
[*]with some timing you were able to directly go into the Hall of Heroes battle skipping the rounds usually required to be done before it

Did people actually get in trouble for using Signet of Midnight on the guild lord? Or was the latter at least reset to an earlier time? I can't recall. But a guild did lose its place in the GvG tournament because they asked the other team to resign.
Coridan
i think with the Signet of Midnight that there was a ladder reset.
There was the zoning exploit for the drunk title...drink up zone out and get all mins...rinse repeat.
Hrm what else... the knights armor "mechanic" wear one item of knights and get -3 no matter where you got hit...
does that mean syncing in RA is an exploit?
Lvl 20 in the guild hall...kill a player over and over for exp in a scrimage battle

The skill was bugged, and could target anyone, including opponents and their guild lord, meaning that they had 10 seconds to live.
It was exploited by some guilds, and therefore they were banned.

How did people get banned today? or recently or whatever...

Not an exploit, but one of the many stupid moves by Anet was removing the Denravi swords (+5 energy). The price spiked at 100k+some ectos.
Then they added +5 en craftable weapons with Factions.
Yeah, makes a lot of sense.

I miss being able to walk outside of a factions city, get a blessing, sac myself, have a hero rez a flesh golem, sac myself again, have another hero rez a flesh golem, then giving both golem owners dual vamp weapons, waiting for them to degen allowing the golem to become hostile=10 kurz/luxon points, then allowing the MoR mesmer with res chant to rez both, rinse and repeat. 10k afking faction every couple hours or so wihout leeching

The exploit where you could disconnect everyone in an instance is very misunderstood.
It required a packet editor, and it used the ability to ping your health to your team. You could only disconnect people in your party. You couldn't become a GM, lol. That is all server side.
