''Texture Ripping"?
Brianna
So, I have this problem. My textures in Guild Wars keep ''Ripping'', I have vertical sync on, and I have tried triple buffering, higher refresh rate, vertical sync, etc. But nothing I do makes my textures stop ripping. Every time I turn my char, they go all choppy and rip up, and it hurts my eyes really bad, not to mention its ugly. So I was wondering if anyone knows a solution?
My video card is an 8600GT, so you know.

I'm having problems also. Odd textures on the terrain and on the character. on the character select screen it looks like the Aurora Borealis. And then the screen begins to flicker. I have a 7900GT vid card. It's not running hot as it tops out around 50c.

Well, my textures are fine, everything looks accordingly, and my PC is very cool, its just when I turn the textures rip up.
Also; I have the latest drivers. And Adam, Vertical Sync is set to ''Application Controlled'' in the control panel, so I figured Guild Wars would handle it from there - and It does make me get like 100 fps when I turn it off, so I know it's functioning.

Vsync is probably forced off in your nvidia control panel.. try accessing that and changing it.
Couldn't tell you how atm, because I don't have a nvidia card

One very off-hand guess: I've seen very nasty framerate-while-turning problems caused by gateway's EZTune and other monitor crapware. In addition to being totally unnecessary, it seems that this junk can cause really nasty conflicts with your video drivers.

Vsync will wait for a vertical sync even if your frame rate is below your refresh rate. That will cause choppy animation, but never tearing. My first guess would be to look in your application profiles in the nVidia control panel, or whatever they're calling it this week. Watch your frame rate as well, using the -perf switch on your shortcut. If your frame rate is going above your refresh rate, something is disabling your vertical sync.

My fps usually sits around 50-60, and my monitor has a 70Hz refresh rate. I do use -Perf at all times, so I'm always watching it. It's just so boggling, I've searched everything high and low, tried so many different settings in the control panel, but nothing will stop the tearing. It's nuts.

Try loading the default profile using the nVidia control panel. Profile menu, Load..., use sysdflt.nsu.

Update: The game runs like a dream in Full-screen mode. But in window mode it's all sorts of messed up, wonder if it's some settings somewhere then. And Chuck, I tried that ''default profile'', didn't change a thing.

Ah, I use the Nvidia profiles for forcing AA and AF, maybe those don't work windowed. But I know for sure Vsync only works fullscreen.
It seemed fine on your other card because your FPS was below your refresh rate. The tearing effect your see is when your FPS are above your refresh rate and frames start overlapping.

Aww.. well that's a shame, cause I like running in window. Guess I'll only do it when I'm not really ''Playing'' then. I also thought about capping my FPS off at 30 (with the switch; -fps xx) but even at 30, and the monitor at 70Hz, still ripped.

Hmm.... I know tearing can still happen no matter what your FPS, but it should be reduced when your FPS are below your refresh rate. Try triple buffering without vsync, I know that helps sometimes.
Also, are your using an LCD or a CRT? I know tearing becomes less noticeable on an LCD. I never use vsync anymore since I got my LCD.

19 Inch LCD. I'll try to run those settings you mentioned in a bit, and I'll report back with the results.

Tested it, no dice.

Okay, I think I might know a reason but I need some confirmation. I'm running a VGA Cable from my LCD Monitor, and my video card only supports DVI. So I'm using a VGA to DVI Converter for it. Should that be fine, or do I need to go buy a real DVI cable?
Because I read a thread, it was old, that mentioned something about DVI being capped out at 60hz refresh rate, but I have to run 70 on this or else I lose tons of image quality and it looks messed up.

It would be a good idea to try it with a dvi cable. I thought all lcd used it. I think the 60hz is for single link only. Dual link goes higher.
Brianna
Yeah, my monitor supports both cables, it has two plugs; One for each kind.
Well if it's recommended that I try both, then I'll have to obtain one of those cables somehow.. so in due time I'll try it out.

Keep in mind that lcd monitors do not actually have a refresh rate, at least not in the same sense as a traditional crt monitor does; there is no photon gun scanning across the screen, which is what the refresh rate is. As such, any tearing is going to be the result of the image to be displayed occurring between screen-image updates. There is some other factor getting in the way. As others have pointed out, playing in windowed mode basically cripples your video card's ability to process things, and so you should stick to full screen mode, where it can perform as it was intended to.
