Internet connection trouble.

Hello guys, i need some similar help as one of the guys needed with his router problems, but the point is that i dont have a wireless router. And now and then my internet stops working, but when i look on the router everything looks good and all 4 lights are on, internet conn, ethernet con.. and so on. i´ve read that one guy said that i could check the 'search for a more preferred network' option is off. if you read this, can you pe more precise?

The searching thing is only for wireless connections, since there may be multiple wireless networks in range of your network card.

You'll have to be more specific about your problem. What does 'stops working' mean?

1. Can you still access websites
2. What does it mean to "stop working"? What actually happens?
3. Can you connect to or ping your router at least?
4. Is there any specific thing that triggers this failure?
5. What sort of hardware are you using?
6. Are you running anything else besides the game, like torrent software, browsers, email clients, etc?

1. yes i can still acess websites.
2. what happens is that gw freezes and the only way i can get back to gw is to write: ipconfig -release, and after that ipconfig -renew in start menu-run.
3. i dont remember my routerXD.
4. im using windows xp.
5. no im not running anything besides gw.

it could be that my hard drive is damaged. bcs one time when i was going to re-install the whole computer i couldnt "full formate NTFS-Filesystem" bcs a blue screen came up and said that my hard drive was damaged. so i had do pick "quick formate NTFS-Filesystem".

Are you using DHCP on your router, or are you connected directly to your modem?

Yes im using a DHCP.

I'll assume that means the router is using DHCP. You can log onto it and check the logs for anything abnormal (assuming you have logging turned on). Anything DHCP related will have DHCP in the type column.

In the meantime, it sounds like what is happening is that your DHCP lease is timing out and the renewal is failing. It could be that your ISP is giving your modem a new IP and the router is failing to update its routing tables, it could be that your router is failing to respond properly to your computer when your computer asks for a new IP address.

It could also be a configuration problem. The netmask may be set incorrectly on your computer or your router, or your router may not have a large enough pool of IP addresses to assign from.

In the short term, until you can provide the log files, you could try changing your router so that it's not using DHCP and your computers all just use assigned IP addresses and DNS hosts. If the problem is in the router rather than connected with the ISP in some way, that should fix it in the short term so you can at least play without getting interrupted.

You'll have to check your routers manual for details, but generally you can get into the admin panel by going to 'http://192.168.1.1' in your browser (or 'https://192.168.1.1'). If that doesn't work, run ipconfig in a command prompt and use the IP address labeled "Default Gateway" in the results.

From there, I don't know specifically what your steps would be on your router. You just have to find the option to have your router stop supplying your computer(s) with IP addresses through DHCP and disable it. You'll also have to supply your own IP address for your computer. Start at step 4 here for help with that.

When you supply your own IP, bear in mind that you have to use the same network your router is. For example, if your router is "192.168.1.1" you should use something like "192.168.1.2". For the DNS addresses, you'll either need to get them from ipconfig (run "ipconfig /all" in a command prompt and write down the two address under "DNS Servers...") or just use the openDNS nameservers:

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Since you can obviously access the menu, try running your browser while GW is frozen. If you can still access websites, your internet connection is not the problem. Your GW is locking up.

The blue screen while doing the full format is not a good sign. In "My Computer", right click on your hard drive - select "Properties". In there, go to "tools", then hit "Check Now" under Error-checking. In the small box that pops up, check "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and then click "Start". This will check the entire drive for problems (and it will take a while - go have supper or sleep.)

If your ISP provided you the router as they do where im from
and assuming it is your router thats the problem, consider giving them a call
and get them to send you a new one. else if its still under warrenty call the manufacturer (get past the phone puppets) and ask some help from the tech support guys. have your details ready - modem/router serial number etc.
