cartography mode or added tools
Sparks Dawnbringer
First I have tried to find a thread like this but could not.
I would like to have a cartography mode that works just like normal mode except that when you bring up your map the areas and cities and missions change colors when you have completely mapped them. We could even have a little counter in the corner that goes down as you map. Like the kill counter in hard mode.
If thats too hard how about an announcement when you enter an area, entering Askalon, town, 97% mapped.
I'm tired of going blind comparing maps back and forth.
Now, for all of you that say "I had to do it that way you should too." there were a lot of areas that are not available today that were way back when. Many of the exploits have been removed. If they took the titles away if you used the exploits the noise would be heard around the world.
But the real reason to do this it to make the game better.

End
The only reason I support this is because im stuck at 99.something% of cantha

/signed on this, but I don't see the reason to make a whole new mode for it. Perhaps when you get 60% cartography on a continent or in a region, a counter like the kill counter in HM would open up, displaying a percentage from 0 to 100% of the current region.

I was in a similar situation, mostly the motivation part and not being sure were I might be missing those last %.
What I ended up doing is picking the places I had doubts with (The ones I had the most doubts for not having unfogged completely etc...) and picked at least 1 area to do per night on average.
The fact that I ended up breaking down this to 1 attempt per area per night, made it much more easy to deal with and ended up completing my Grandmaster Cartography title faster than insisting that tonight is the night I'm completing it.
Good luck and don't give up
PS : If you are like me, you might end up with only 1 area that has that last missing part, and you do not do it since you are certain that it is not that zone. So if you run out of certain places to map, make a short list of those places/areas and then work on them the same way.

I like that idea. It tells you the zone in the middle of your screen when you enter the area anyways. A simple informative line of text (no pop-up boxes or anything annoying) saying "you have uncovered X.XX% of this area" would save a lot of time comparing maps.
I have Elonian & Canthan Grandmaster Cartographer which were both done without aids and am currently at around 85% of Tyria which I'm doing little by little while vanquishing, but I expect I'll end up at around 99.x% and waste countless hours scanning the map for any unclear group of pixels.
I doubt it'll happen, but it'd be a great feature. It would also give a better sense of accomplishment when you enter each area & it says 100%.

Freaking click links and actually read them/do your homework. It's been OK-ed by Anet.
Stupid Shizno
kanyatta is just trolling, texmod has been out long enough for everyone to use it or heard of it.
obviously those who use it know it was given the green light from devs when it was posted on their official wiki

The whole idea was to have an ingame way of doing it without having to go to any second party. I went to the site and that big warning is a bit hard to ignore. I just wanted a simple way to map progress. And keep score a bit better than me and a list. And a way to know for sure you really are done with an area.

/notsigned. Cartographer is already easy as it its. No need to cheapen the title that doesn't have benefits to to the gameplay.
MithranArkanere
Just a way to 'reset' the current or the whole map would be enough.
Miost of the time, the hard thing about the Cartographers is how to remember were ypu have not licked the walls yet. (Yeah, I say lick, not hug, Cartographer is all about licking walls)

TexMod makes it easy enough that it negates this idea.
IF TexMod was not allowed or did not work/exist for GW, then this idea should be implemented.
I still support this idea. This has been suggested before.

And with my luck I'm the one it would break on! lol These outside programs are a problem you never kmow what someone has done to them or added to them.
All we need is a simple fix. They know the information. Please just tell us too. I don't want it to tell me where I haven't scaraped just when a area is done.

TexMod? Not everyone wants to use a program when there is a risk of infecting your computer with Spyware and getting banned from the game. Just not worth it even for a title.
/signed for the OP's idea, that would be a big help. It would also be nice if, in Cartography mode only, the monsters weren't there. It gets annoying after a while being out there only to map and getting nuked.

TexMod is expressly allowed by ANet, but it's one horribly buggy piece of software. Whenever I use TexMod I get weird graphics bugs. It still beats having to squint and guess what little corner of the map I may not have wallhugged sufficiently, but I'd prefer a less buggy version implemented in-game by ANet.
(As an aside to the guy stuck at 97%: it gets exponentially worse the closer to 100% you get. The last 0.1% is will take as much time as the 2.8% from where you are now, which in turn takes as much as the 20% before that.... Speaking as a legendary cartographer: don't believe the people who say they got 100% with large swaths uncharted - except for Cantha you really do need every single little pixel on the map.)

Yes I'm stuck at 99.1 in Tyria and done with Canthia. I guess I'm going to go on with Elona because I don't think I will be able to do Tyria. I guess I just wanted a better way. A way that avoided waisting time reskimming places that are already done because there is no way to tell if an area is done.
Well, gosh I finally finished Tyria. I got .3 points looking for collectables for New Year chefs. I got .1 in Great Northern Wall running back a different route. Thanks to who ever posted that tip. I got .1 killing Evania and warping to her body in the Wilds. I got .3 on the final ring of Fire mission and got the final .1 in the Mineral Springs in the caves with the imps in the far NW. Now Im what looks to be done with Elona but still have 2.3 to go. I guess I have to learn ohw th deal with the Remains of Shahala now.
It sure would be much simpler if when you arrived in an area you got a message that said this area is completely mapped if you had done it.
