1. Don't start off trying to do it first in Hard Mode. It's HARDER than normal mode.
2. If you are new to the area/build, tell your party members. Someone will usually help you out and tell you what to do and what not to do.
3. Do your assigned job. The typical PUG team brought you into the party for a specific purpose, if your not doing your job, your wasting the teams time.
For Slavers, as the Ranger/Rit, your primary responsibility, in order of importance, are the following:
1. To maintain Frozen Soil, Winter (Forge/Duncan parts), and sometimes Symbiosis. That means placing the spirits in a safe location but near enough to have affect.
2. To "Gaze of Fury" problem spirits, "Spirits of Disenchantment" to protect the Ob Flesh Tank from being stripped and "Frozen Soil" to allow your team to quickly resurrect dead members
3. To "Flesh of my Flesh" dead party members.
4. To Attack tight mobs with Splinter Weapon/Barrage.
If a key member of the team bailed because of your actions, it's quite reasonable that the team quickly breaks up and heads back to Umbral Grotto. Not being invited to other PUG teams is probably a result of past team members already planted into forming teams with them telling the leader that you couldn't do your job.
The good news is that people have short memories and eventually new pug teams are formed.
Good luck and play smart!

You encounter something called "PUG".

I remember once during the height of fire ele spam I got kicked from a group for asking if I could run my air build. The same build that is now on the PvX wiki's great working builds page.
http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Build:E/...ent_Air_Spiker
This was before the days of Shell Shock, which I now include in place of res sig or lightning hammer (depending).
And the funniest part was that most of the mobs in the zone came in small groups of no more than 3. Yeah, like I really need Meteor Shower for that... I mean, fire rocks when you're getting swarmed, but air kicks the crap out of it in small numbers.
Ah Guild Wars, I will always remember you for your uncanny no monthly fee play, unique dual-class system and skill hunting goodness. But most of all, I'll remember the swarms of DB's, dirtying every city spamming their overpriced junk in general chat and the endless plague of moron soup that is PUG's.

Zonzai um people still do that fire ele spam and being an air ele and pugging FoW is almost impossible.
Zonzai
FoW requires fire because of the large groups of mobs it can hit and the overall damage that it can do. As do many other areas where an organized group is required.
That said, having played an elementalist since before day one, in my opinion, people don't seem to care so much when you run air as they used to.
Also, any elementalist that can't run any element or any viable combination of them at a moments notice hasn't been playing one very long. Water is the only semi-forgivable element to be lacking in. But it still says something about the player.
-EDIT- As with my prior post, this is all opinion and cannot be taken as anything else. It is not intended as fact, social commentary, literal data or any other nonsensical nonsense.

It's happened to me before, a couple of jerks blamed me for not being able to heal them with my Dervish (after I repeatedly told them, I am not a healer). Me and the guy who stayed beat the mission and decided to come back and gloat about how useless they were...*It's what they get for being jerks...I never listen to the golden rule!!!*

However, I agree with Zonzai, sometimes just because fire magic has a lot of good, spread damage, it's more suited for areas with huge mobs such as The Deep, Urgoz or DoA.

Oh man, 15 whole minutes....
Sorry dude, but if 15 minutes looking for a group is so entirely unrealistic to you that you ragequit the game and come on Guru to whine about it, then I imagine you probably did become impatient and were the cause of the party wipe you described in the OP. If you don't have time to spend on what is heavily suggested to be the hardest area in the game, then you made the right decision to quit.
