Account Hacked

My cousins account was hacked. Somehow he got on soon after because he kicked him off. We tried to reset his password but he has to go through plaync and somehow he has an error that won't allow him to create the game account on the site to change the password. I opened up a ticket for him so hopefully we can keep the account safe.

Well the person doing it has been trying to get on and do something on it, maybe steal things or just play. Since we can't change the password at this moment, we have to watch the screen and quickly log back in to prevent anything from happening.

The guy doing it messaged us shortly after asking if he still had money on his monk. Of course since he keeps kicking that account off, we missed getting the screenshot for proof. I talked to the player through that name for a while and he denied it. Yet he goes offline and shortly later, we begin getting kicked as he tries to log on to our account (two of us are lanning so I can monitor the friends list from one as he attacks the other).

My question is, is there a way we can have him banned for this? We know his ingame name. Assuming this, couldn't guildwars do an ip check to verify that yes indeed the account was logged in on at the same location that his account was logged into? Plus the time frame between each log in would be more than enough proof.

Just now I got a screen shot of him saying that he deleted the monk + warrior on the account and that he will do more. We checked and he didn't probably because we keep checking himoff so quickly. I won't list his name since I don't want him to try to mess the account up out of frustration. Can anyone help me out on this situation? He is still trying to log in...

As an update he did delete nearly every one of his characters and we salvaged nearly every item though. Does guildwars carry a backup database to restore characters? We know the names of them. We are severely pissed off at plaync for their fatal error. It takes only a minute to change the password yet their mistake and led us to lose everything he had done in a year playing. He still has the nerve to ask for all his money to keep one of his far characters...I really hate sum bags like this. Someone please help us.

Yowch. Log a support ticket as quick as you can - I don't think there's any other help and advice you can be given other than keep doing what you're doing and be vigilant.

That's bad.

[edit]Damn, posted my reply at the same time you posted your second - that really sucks. Sadly, I believe that once a char is deleted, that's it.

Could you please give me a link as to where to send this to? Plaync has one of the worst websites i've ever seen regarding support. I mean for christ's sake, it is easier to change a bank account password than a guildwars password! We have everything we needed and we weren't allowed to change it.

The support certainly leaves a lot to be desired.

You said in your first post that you "opened a ticket for him" - that's it, that's the only way. Persist with that.

[edit (again)] You could also try asking for help on the official wiki - it's not any more certain than asking here, but you will certainly get a larger audience. I'm at work behind restrictive internet filtering, so I can't access it myself, but off the top of my head I think it's at http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Help:...count_question

The way I figured to log into my PlayNC account to change the password was that the username and the pass were the same you used to log onto GW.

I.E. [email protected]. The username would be SmileLikeUmeanIt (it doesn't always fit, so just put in as much as you can) and use the password you're using on GW. It'll send you an email straight after.

Hope it works for you.

N.B.: No, that's not a real account, so no one even bother trying to log onto it.

We did log in to plaync. The serial was put as "in use" and would not allow us to create the game for the account.

No, you have a separate account for playNC. Annoying isn't it?

When my account was hacked ANet restored it in a relatively fast amount of time...however, everything the hacker had done to the account was irreversible (cost me my first & only character, a lvl 9 ranger *cry*)

Bad luck mate.

Hope the thief hasn't created a playNC master account for himself. Again, it's support ticket time, and you may well be needing your original serial keys at this time.

Good luck.

Yah, you need to fax them (or mail) a photocopy of your serials.

I would advise your friend to trade all his valuables to someone who can keep them safe until you get the situation worked out. Then again, still be careful as there are plenty of douches out there who hack acounts just to delete someone's character.

Ugh i'm afraid there's not much you CAN do mate :/

Anet won't replace anything that's for sure..

You need A: a Photograph or scan of all CD-keys tied to the account.
B: the last 4 digits of the credit/debit card used to register the account
C: Something else which i forget.. ><

I had this done to a friend once..some hacker got in his account, stole a lot of stuff. My friend deleted chars as fast as he could so the hacker didnt get anything valuable. Then Anet banned his acc temporarily..then they banned it permanently for advertising inapropriate websites..

It annoys me ttm.

But good luck :/

not sure if there's any difference between regions or something but i can change my password from the "edit account" option on character select screen.
and it sounds like the person who hacked your friend's account is someone that you know, yes? if so i'd pay him a visit irl and "talk" to him about it... you didn't hear that from me though
other than that i don't think i have much more to add than what's already been said, see if he could give his valuables to a friend (maybe to you?) until it's been sorted out.

No, no. The key was already in use because you created another account and tried to plug it in. When he went into the online store an account was automatically created and the key was listed under there. That's the account you need to long into.

He needs to have his comp checked out. More than likely he has a keylogger or gave out info. Have his entire system checked out.

People who have tied their account to a PlayNC master account (to use the ingame store) have to go through the website. Very annoying.

Even if you're not tied to Plaync, they make you when you want to change the password.

This comes a few days on the heels of a thread, "what if my account is hacked, and characters deleted" sort of thing. Hmmmmm

I really don't understand how people get their accounts supposedly "hacked". Keeping your account safe is as easy as not using the email address you use to log in for anything other than guildwars and not downloading files or visiting suspicious sites related to guild wars. I'm pretty positive that no one is actually "hacking" accounts as they could probably find something more valuable to crack if they were actually able to do it. If you download shit and get a keylogger or give out the email you login with you really only have yourself to blame.

I know someone who actually did have their account hacked. I got the impression it was a file downloaded from guru that did it.

To keep your account from being hacked, you should make youre username on the plaync page totally random, and make an email you use only for the gw login. Then, use a password you don't use anywhere else. There is no way in hell someone will get your account then, unless you don't have antivirus(like my friend).

And no, Anet cannot restore anything deleted. If you are thinking about starting a sardelac thread saying they should, well, Gaile and the Devs already said it would be near impossible with the current game system, so tough luck.

Yes, you can get him banned, and Anet will conduct an investigation. This type of stuff makes em flip.

This exact same thing happened to a guildie of mine. He had his CD keys and managed to ultimately change his password...

however, as for your characters, there is no rollback. Any damage the hacker has done is permanent. Sorry.

One question I have is - why do you keep logging out and then "watching to see if the other guy logs in". Why don't you just stay logged into GW until you get it cleared up? The other guy can't log in while you are. You can even minimize GW and continue to do other things while you're logged on. To minimize bandwidth, just sit in the Guild Hall (if you have one) or go to some obscure town in the International district.

It should be pretty easy to get him banned.

Actually, the other guy can log on while his cousin is on. In fact if his cousin is logged on the game will kick him so that the other guy can log.

So, no, that's not gonna work.

Exactly. It should also be noted that he can go to the character select screen without anyone seeing him and delete to his hearts content.

I feel bad for you mate. Those hackers should die lol! He can not sell your account what or so ever. Why would they want to do that lol! Good luck for you in the future.

=> Yes, it won't work lol! What you can do is trying to make him logging in your account again and ask "Game Master" from Anet investigate their IP. Everytime you log on, your IP show up and save in the game. I'm sure it won't be a prob for GM. When GM have his IP, he's in dam trouble lol. That mean everytime he log on with that IP, his account get banned lol! Good luck! Though there are ways to change IP but it will always be reset to default unless he changes it everytime he get on the net lol!

Thank you guys for all your input. We salvaged all the items we could from his account - and traded everything basically to his brother's account (We all play together - lan sometimes). You have to leave at least one character on the account at all times and the "hacker" left the W/Mo assuming that was his favorite while he deleted his furthest character that he played the most (his monk).

I couldn't figure out why he left the W/Mo until he contacted me and said he would leave the tank for 100k. I had this money, which I'm giving a good portion to my cousin now, but I remember the rule about keeping one character and turned him down.

They are currently trying to verify that my cousin does own the account to get the password changed. This guy still has the nerve to long on and FARM on the w/mo he left. Once again, I'm not going to announce his name just in case that would jeopardize our chance of getting him back.

As to how get got the password...i have no clue. Maybe he broke through the yahoo account my cousin uses and found an e-mail with his guildwars info. He wouldn't just give out the password but since he plays the game on 5 different computers, it is very hard to determine what he could have possibly downloaded. Is it possible that something like a key logger could have been attached to a build file on the guild wiki? I'm fairly certain he downloads builds from them and I have no clue as to how reliable that is.

I'll go ahead and post an update once this gets cleared up. I'm sure the ip logs and the screenshots are more than enough proof to get him so let's just see.

Thanks for your help.
