is this area needed for grandmaster cartographer? it would be so unfair if it did. if i can't get grandmaster cartographer, i'm not even going to try.
for those curious.. i was afk during that little mission with rurik to kill doomtooth (ranger charr boss) and my team beat it for me. i couldn't explore it :/

Nothing in pre-searing counts for cartography.
There are also no missable areas in Tyria - everywhere is visitable unlimited times.

That portion of the map (the one below the ascalon arena) IS visible on the main map. For that reason, I think it should count (although I obviously don't want it too!).

Oh, that bit. It's not mappable by any means, don't worry about it. Just because it's on the main map doesn't mean that it's mappable - there are a lot of unreachable areas. I'm a GM Carto and I don't have that mapped

Yes, I know what you mean. It is very annoying having spots on your map that you can't uncover.
There was a great glitch last year, where the Amnoon Oasis area appeared under the Lion's Arch skin (or vice versa) - so all us budding cartographers were running around like crazy unblocking large amounts of map that should never have been explorable!

From your picture:
Some of the area blow and to the right of the arena is in the Fort Ranik mission.
Much of the area between Piken Square and the "The Great Northern Wall" outpost is in the "The Great Northern Wall" mission and is easier to get with a high level character and speed boosts.

I have the same problem .. but was wondering if it was because i did not enter the areana places. Now Im lvl 20 & can not enter them

No, arenas like that don't count. All you have to do is go to the arena. The battle area doesn't count.

parts of you upper tract between piken and what not are explorable but you need to kill something down in the paths and use a necro skill to port into that section then run like mad before the timer elapses.
