Charactername change, customize

Well I have a simple question.
Some friend got banned for 3 days because his character name was inappropriate. As it was his main, it was stuffed with elite armors.
If he does a name change, could he still equip his old weapons/armors despite having another name?
Was argueing with someone about it, while I was 100% sure you could still use them, the other guy 'read it on wiki':

I think I read somewhere that armor and weapons are customized to the character and not the name... So if you customized a weapon to "Insert name here," deleted him and made a new one with the same name, you wouldn't be able to use it

I'm not sure on this, but it may depend upon whether ANet gives him the option to just change the character's name without deleting it. Ask them.

Always keep in mind that Wiki is ... a wiki. That means it's just written by ordinary players using the best info they have available at the time. Think of Wiki as a "guide".

I tried it some time ago.. didn't work, myabe some kind of update made it possible... so, not sure either ^^

If anet makes you change it, it may be possible. But since the quote says even renamed characters would have no access to armor, etc. under the old name, looks like he's not gonna have any access.

Looks like he needs to pick more carefully before picking a name...

Stuff is customized to the character, not the name.

If it was customized to the name, you could easily get a char to droks, get max armor, delete the char and make a new one with the same name. Seeing as that doesn't work, well...

Exactly. If you're told to change your character's name, your character will still be able to use any items customized to that character.

and yes he has got the character for 3 years. I guess he owned some guy in the arena's and he got reported because the other guy 'was offended by his name'.
Almost every character can actually be banned for inappropriate name. Since most words also mean something else in urban slang.

Well, unless you just put syllables together like I did.

Someone described it well in another thread, they said to think about each character like a number, every time a new character is created, it gets a number, so if you change the name, it wont change the number, so im guessing the armor should still work.
