i wonder how strict ANet's copyrights are when it comes to GW?
Dark Paladin X
I'm just wondering, and if gaile could be the first person to post, how strict is Anet's copyrights?
Because I looked into a fighting game crossover called Super Smash Bros. Brawl, will be released in U.S. soon, that consists of different characters from different franchise (Nintendo is the big maker of this series). And i pictured Vekk using the stupid homerun-bat K'Oing Mario in my head. Anyways, it's stupid. If it happens that another company would come in and ask if they could use Mhenlo, Lina, Gwen, Vekk, etc. for a game as a crossover, I'm pretty sure Gaile would respond with a simple no. But I'm not sure how strict the copyrights are when it comes to Guild Wars, but the chances of Vekk appearing in another game would be 0%.

Again, their copyrights may be strict. although squaresoft, the guys who made Final fantasy, got copyrights from Disney.

Sonic and Solid Snake have shown up on the Gamecube and Gameboy.
Many people have been wanting Megaman, since Megaman has appeared on just about every Nintendo made console, but I don't think the called up Inafune...
ANYWAY....I think Anet should expand the GW universe with more games/novels/comics/toys before trying out cross-franchise projects.

OP isn't talking about companies with "loose copyrights". All those companies are getting paid big-time for allowing their IPs to be used in Super Smash Bros. They never do it out of "the goodness of their hearts" or because they "aren't strict with their copyrights".
You can be sure that the makers of Super Smash Bros. didn't dare include any character in their game until they first got all the legal contracts signed to be able to do so, and including the payment arrangements to the IP holders for the use of those characters.
A yes or no would never be determined by "personal feelings". It would be determined by dollars.

Console gaming and online gaming are too different things. It's very unlikely GW related things would end up anywhere besides GW.

I think Anet should feel honoured if their characters, currently non-existent to popular culture, finds their way into a Mario game.

A Guild Wars character in Brawl?
A. Guild. Wars. Character. In. Brawl.
Brawl. Guild. Character. A. In. Wars.
This has to be a joke thread. This has to be a joke thread. The complete illogic here is making my head spin.

Ah Mario! <3 <3
I know we're really careful about what is called our "IP" or intellectual property. We don't want to see ticky-tacky things with Guild Wars on them, after all. But we're definitely open to considering quality ideas, and I'd guess that novels would be something to which we'd give a good deal of thought.
As to cross-game promotions, I have no idea if we have been asked, nor if we would be asked, but I imagine such an idea would also be given some thought.
Guild Wars Underoos? Probably out of the question.

Also, one BIG thing stoping this is...
Brawl was released today, January 31st, in Japan (release date is still March 9th for North America). There are already lots of lists out now containing all the "secret characters." I don't see GW in there.

GW_VCD_CN.jpg
'Cause during my travels to remote places in China, I sometimes see in cheesy music stores GW's sexy girls in the cover of VCDs, music CDs and even 'ol cassettes.
The attached picture was taken some months ago just to prove how much sensation our girls are havin'...
By the way, the music sucks... got cheated due to the lure in question

The stipulations for third party characters in Brawl were:
1. They must be a well known character.
2. They must have, at some point appeared on a Nintendo console game.
Frankly, I'm very glad they stayed away from things like Final Fantasy. While Cecil or Kain might have been neat, the fanboy characters would have been very annoying. Snake and Sonic are pretty awesome to have there, but they don't need to go overboard with it. The only other third party character I would have liked to see (who didn't have a chance) would have been Master Chief, just so we could have all the console "mascots" in one game. :P
Mario. vs Sonic. vs Snake. vs Master Chief.

But seriously, it's kinda redundant to see vekk using a homerun bat.

These characters are ArenaNet's intellectual property. Laws covering that are well established. There is only one copyright law as well, there are no different degrees or strictness.
Copyright is usually enforced only if money is made off a certain IP. If you mod a game with GW characters, then distribute that for free, it can be considered fan art. IP owner may still demand you stop using it.
Original models, textures and sounds may never be redistributed without permission, not even for free. To use anything from GW as fan art, it needs to be redrawn or re-modelled to resemble the characters. This is because while characters are abstract entities, the bits and bytes representing them in GW is tangible asset.
Redistribution of game assets has led to a large number of lawsuits in the past, either as part of fan art, derivative works or commercial products. This is, at most basic level, considered same as piracy.
Fan made projects, such as emulators, that don't redistribute the client or original assets however have never been successfully challenged in court. Only emulators that have been shut down via legal means involved using stolen server side code, or in case of Bnetd, providing a patch to break copy-protection (piracy again).
In general, before using such assets for public fan-art, it's wise to ask for permission. They are usually granted.
