I'm gonna make either one or the other.. I don't know which one I should go with.

I guess the monk has more options in terms of farming, but the necro is just so damn cool looking ..

Anyone have experience with both and can tell me? ty

Also, should I start him on Factions or Prophecies or what?

I've used them both for solo-farming.
Both are good.
I made the Necromancer first, and still play it the most, but I eventually made a monk for the added versatility.

edit: As far as chapter selection for character creation, the best advice I can give is to choose your starting location based on how you want your chararacter to look. Prophecies has annoying attribute quests, if that is a concern.

To make a 55, you should at least have Prophecies, but judging from your post, you do. You need it for Baltazars Spirit and Essence Bond, those are good e-management. But, I can't decide for you as good as you can. I'll list some benefits to each:

-Monk
-Can get Protection, Healing, Smiting and Divine Favor over rank 12.
-You can freely choose your second profession.
-Can use Spell Breaker, for Realms of the Gods.

-Necro
-As a Necro/Monk, you'll be doing more damage with Spiteful Spirit & Spoil Victor than as a Monk/Necro.
-Their looks.
-Has a lot of versatility when not 55ing, for example Minion Master, Curses and many others.

But, I would make them both, they are both really useful classes in general.

55 necro can be used for farming one single boss
55 monk with SoJ for the large groups

You're mistaken. You're also posting misinformation. A 55 Necro with [skill=text]Shielding Hands[/skill] and [skill=text]Shield of Absorption[/skill] can farm large groups just as well as a Monk, and in some cases, faster.
[skill]Spiteful Spirit[/skill]
In the end, it's all a matter of preference. Monk usually wins in versatility, but Necro can kill slightly faster.

ye that would work too
but a monk is more secure i find
my 105 monk (wich is basically a 55 just without -50 cesta) can clear fast and good
also the defense is better
my necro is for boss only farm
but you're right
SS can kick some ass like at the DoA that dropped groups in a matter of seconds

Would you guys recommend terratanking instead of 55ing?

Necro tends to drop them faster - and he does look a little cooler ^^ - but monk is quite solid. I'd actually have to call it a toss-up, depending entirely on which one you're more familiar with skill-wise.

monk because not all things can be 55ed and a monk can also go 600/smite

I have one of each, and they're both good for different things. However I got more use out of my 55 monk personally. The 55 necro I use to farm norn points from Bison tournament.

However if you're looking for farming purposes, the best farming build I've encountered is the 330 Vengeful Farm ritualist. I love mine

It depends on the area, the enemy and your playstyle ~ If you are going to be encountering conditions such as burning then the monks divine favour bonus can be a lifesaver and because of these conditions there are several areas which a monk can farm that a Necro will struggle with. There is not as far as I know any area a 55 N/Mo can farm that a 55 Mo/N cannot. (albeit often a little more slowly) Also when running 55 SV rather than 55 SS ~ I find the monk to be largely superior as you will inevitably be waiting for SV to recharge after each kill regardless as to whether the damage is 85 or 105 from SV.

While terratanks don't work the same way as a 55, they are also great for farming various foes. 55 necro, 55 monk and terratank are all pretty good for farming.

Note: Elementalists can E/A Shadowform+ sliver armor to farm most bosses in the game.

dont make a character just to 55. make a character you like and get them a 55 armor set to use on the side.

Excellent advise! I'd have to concur. I've seen many create a monk, for instance, just to make a 55, not get the hang of it, and then leave the poor monk sad and lonely in their character slot.
