I just got a new computer and I am trying to re download GW. I got through the first part, but the download after the log in screen is taking forever. It is like 19,000 files. How long does it take to completely down it all. Is there a fast way to download it?

Edit: If i start dowloading and then stop will it restart where i left off?

Is the image short cut faster?

Do the "-image" thing (you can search for it if you don't know what I mean). The first time I did it, it took me about 3 hours. However, without knowing your connection speed, better leave it to download while sleeping.

Umm depends on your net connection i guess. Also you can use the -image shortcut and leave your GW on over night to download all the files.

Yes, it will resume from where it left off. Including the -image in the command line won't make it faster, in fact, it will take longer to finish. The difference lies in load times when you actually get into the game. By using the -image command line, you've downloaded all the files and decompressed them so that load times are minimal once it's done. If you don't use the -image command line to download all the files, you'd have to download files related to the instance when you enter them.

The full download of all files (starting GW with the -image switch) is a 3.6 gigabyte download. If you're on dial-up that takes four days to download. With a 2Mbit broadband it should take about 4 hours. Download speed appear capped at about the equivalent of 5MBit, so regardless of how fast your connection is, it'll never be faster than roughly one hour.

If you feel downloading an incremental update takes long, I'd strongly advise against using the -image switch.

Maybe its time for a sticky on installing reinstalling GW "more fool me if there already is one"

Something along the lines of

after installing GW and updating it

back up the dat file to one or all of the following

1 a dvdrw
2 another hard disk
3 usb memory stick or similar
4 last resort keep a backup in another folder on the same hard disk, it will not help if you lose the hard disk but will if you just get a corrupted game file.

Keep the main game dat file updated and then use it to replace your backup monthly.

The dvd option will only take 20 min or so the other options much less.
