treants excist in some fantasy tales Tolkeins for one so see no problem with the basic idea for a future game.

No armour to buy you would just get tougher bark/skin as you aged ie gained levels, Ditto weapon damage.
Extra damage from fire would be reasonable

One skill would be essential and thats disguising yourself as a real tree so enemies ignored you "bit like Gwens skill in the bmp"
