When I go into my inventory for my heros in EOTN and look at the armor it says something like "22 - 80 depending on level". What does that mean?

it means that if your hero is low level it will have low level armour at lvl 20 it will get max 80 in this case your hero warrior

But all the heros in EOTN start at lvl 20, so its sort of pointless.

Heroes were introduced in NF, and there they didn't start at level 20. Since the EOTN heroes basically use the same system, those kind of notes simply carry over. It doesn't really make a difference, and it'd probably be more work than it's worth to change that system.

Personally, Ii never understood why it didn't just give the actual number value for the armor as it was at the time you actually checked...

Due to the EotN heroes being level 20, it's pointless. But for the heroes in NF it means:

All Ranger, Assassin, and Dervish hero's AL is calculated as "(lvl*3)+10".
Warrior and Paragon are calculated as "(lvl*3)+20".
All caster classes are calculated as "lvl*3".

In addition to this, ranger heroes get a standard +30 armor against elemental damage, and warrior get an additional +20 against physical.

It used to do that after Nightfall was released. I noticed it got changed some time around the EotN Preview weekend.
