New to GW and Sin: Where to start?

I've just recently been flagshipped and wanted to get into an MMO which has been around for a while and didn't require monthly fees. After surfing around I decided on GW. Having not bought a game in 18 months I had a bit of $$$ in my gaming fund so I have bought GW:GOTY, Factions, Nightfall and EOTN.

While I want to eventually PvP, I'm more interested in solo PvE ATM to learn the ropes. I have started on Factions. I am currently at lvl 18 doing a A/Rt build. A few questions:

1. Which is the best expansion to start with? While I have read Factions is realtively easy, I've also been told that Nightfall may be better if I want to solo PvE due to heros and being able to do a A/D build.

I am at Kaineng Docks. My Current build:

LvL 18 A/Rt, 13 DM, 5 CM, 11 CS

1. Death Charge 2. Unsus Strike 3. Fox Fangs 4. Twisted Fangs 5. Death Blossum 6. Shad. Refuge 7. Dash 8. Crit Eye

I am pretty much getting pwned with the primary quests and am having alot of trouble finishing some of the harder secondary quest like Cap Son. I usually try to max henchmen and take all except the Sin.

2. What is a good beginner build to get to know Sin? I recently saw this build:

A/D

Jagged Strike
Wild Strike
Death Blossom
Moebius Strike (Elite)
Critical Defenses
Mystical Regeneration (Dervish/Nightfall)
Critical Eye
Critical Agility (Nightfall)

Try having 13 Critical Strikes for the +3 energy on crit. and 8 Earth Prayers for +3 Health Regen./Enchantment. Other that, keep your Dagger Mastery as high as you can have it.

This build will allow you to own about 85-90% of all Guild Wars content. The other 10-15%, you might have to go ranged (A/R) or tweak this build a bit. It's not the most original build, but that's because it's the best in my opinion.

You can also switch Jagged out for Golden Fox Strike or Sneak Attack (requires Eye of the North). Most other Lead Attacks won't work as well as either of the 3 I named above.

Would I be better of cutting my loses with my current build in Factions, I am seriously getting pwned and realying on henchmen hasen't helped me much, and starting a new character on Nightfall and then work my way backwards to each expansion. Any help would be appreciated And for all the trolls: yes I am a noob and I suck

Firstly I would'nt worry to much about getting "pwnd" until you reach lvl 20, get max armor and get the skills you need.

Secondly I'd look at your play style. If you full hench are you letting the hencies grab aggro before you attack, are you taking enough healing on your team, are you prioritizing your targets correctly, etc, etc.

Getting to lvl 20 should take you no more than a day or two in factions so I'd bide my time till then and just remember your pretty fragile till you get the required skills.

Good luck.

Is there anyway to choose a Sin as primary character in Nightfall?

Yeah fo sho as long as you have your campaigns linked to the same account it should be an option in character creation.

you can't make a new character and start in nightfall and choose assassin, no. but a character starting in nightfall can eventually get assassin as a secondary class. since you are new to the game and by the sound of it just got to the mainland you probably don't have max armor or max weapons (you don't need expensive ones, collector will do). save up your money and get them. from there use the builds others talked about, i'm not great at assassin's so I won't recommend any myself.

Yeah he's right ^^

Once you get to Kaieng you should get the option of a quest to head over to NF.

moebius strike is definately one of the staple skills in sin builds, but hes new, hes got a loong way to go to even think about capping it.same goes for balty faction unlock and elite tome at what 5 or 6k these days?

something like this (unless you wanna do zaishen challenge for balthazar faction and buy a tome or wait until you do eternal grove mission (kurzick) and cap moebius strike

[skill]Jagged Strike[/skill][skill]Wild Strike[/skill][skill]Death Blossom[/skill][skill]Impale[/skill][skill]Siphon Speed[/skill] healing of choice

and [skill]Flashing Blades[/skill] which is cappable from these 2 quests

Henching with sins is harder than henching with other classes, anyway, because the henchies like to stay bunched up close to you:

With a caster class you can call targets and watch your melee henchies charge in, and you can apply hexes/spells whereever necessary. With a non-sin melee class you can charge into the frontline and your henchies accompany you, with the casters forming a nice backline and the melee folks backing you up.

With a sin, where you ideally want to be teleganking the enemy backline (hello monks!), you end up dragging all your henchies in because they want to stay close to you, your frontline/backline setup collapses and everything goes bad. You can flag them a bit, but that often ends up being more of a hindrance than a help when battle gets 'fluid'.

The alternative, ultimately, is just to play PvE like you're a slightly squishier warrior (crit defenses is your friend), hit the enemy frontlines, and take as many monks in your party as you can. Also take a ritualist. Henchies don't complain, thankfully.

Once you're engaged and things go fluid, you can usually make a break for the enemy monk and take him/her out without ruining your party formation.

At least, that's how I've always done it. Possibly I'm just not terribly good at this, though.

Anyway, once you get to kaineng, get over to elona and grab some heroes: that'll make all henching far, far easier.

Critical Defenses > Flashing Blades.

I ran around with no elite for most of factions because most of them were crap the most useful elite would is Moebius. Just buy it with balth then use a tome. And because you have all the games this makes it a lot easier for build choices .

Golden Fox Strike
Wild Strike
Death Blossom
Moebius Strike
Critical Agi
Critical D
Optional
Optional

And you may want to head over to EOTN or NF and get some heroes to make your PvE more enjoyable.

Once you get into higher areas don't expect to find a group. Assassins have a bad rep of dieing quickly or thinking they can "tank".

Also, somewhat counterintuitively, going from factions to Proph or NF often necessitates a rethink of build, at least initially: the moebius blossom build is by far the best sustained damage build going..on paper, but if your foes are dying before you can actually USE moebius, it's basically wasted. For proph at least, this will be the case for most foes until the crystal desert. So be prepared to pack high-damage repeatable chains for early prophecies stuff. Assassin's promise is fairly fun here.

Anyway, play around in 'normal' areas for a good while before considering elite areas. It helps.

as for armor do pretty much what ever you want, just try to keep your health over 500 if you don't bring a strong self heal (mystic regen), and I like my energy around 30.

How easy is it to change secondary profession to dervish once I get a command post and make it to Nightfall? Where do you get zealous daggers from? I tried looking it up on Guild Wiki but couldn't find any info. Is it a tang or a handle or an actual dagger?

I didn't realise Sin had a bad rep. for grouping once they reach high levels. Not that will change anything for me. I tried ranger and just got very bored with the class when I made it off the island and to the markets. I'm really having a ball with Sin, best attack animation in the game I've seen so far. I've also rethought my basic build to include more healing skills, and things are going alot smoother now. I'm lvl 15, still on the island, but I have managed to not die yet Which is a big improvement considering my first try as a Sin I died to a Red Yeti in the very first instance at lvl 2...I think it boils down to all the tips I've got so far, not rushing into mobs, and getting a good sit rep before starting any attach chain to make sure no other mobs, or my henchies, get tied up in aggro range.

1. Talk to the Profession Changer and pay 500 gold and you're done. If the Profession Changer isn't there, you'll have to do a few quests for him to show (though I believe he's there by default).

2. Either find the zealous dagger tangs (identify a gold dagger and expert/superior salvage), or buy them off of others.

The Zealous dagger upgrade is a dagger tang, they aren't super common, but speaking from experience the energy management they provide is indispensible. My assassin never runs out of energy unless there's active e-denial going on. You should be able to buy the mod for 1 or 2k or an a whole set of Zealous daggers for a bit more, if you don't feel like diving into the red text district of trade chat it is worth it to check out the auction part of the site here. It might not be quite as fast, but you won't be spending your ingame time spamming your ad in town.

And it sounds like you're really doing the assassin proffession justice, congrats on the 0 deaths. Hope you can get survivor

heh....there is not auction house in-game so I assume that you are refering to the auction part of the site. Most times, because they are very common zealous daggers they are anywhere between 3k-15k. Not too expensive.

Sins have two effective play styles. Spikes and Pressure. Pressure is damage over time that slowly(or quickly) whittles down health of a single or multple targets. Pressure can be done with multiple skills and does not always require a spesific build. Mobi strike is a good skill for a pressure build. It is pure damage over time with no fancy little tricks to do +200 damage in a single strike(exageration)

Spikes are quick bursts of extreme amounts of damage that take only a few seconds. These require spesific builds. These are more for high end players. These builds generaly focus on placing an enchantment on yourself (or a hex on a foe) to start then a quick few skills and if your target is not eating dirt then they are staggering away to heal. These kinds of builds are hit then run. If you do not kill them, gtfo of there as fast as possible!

PvE sins are not always going to find a PuG group, they are the faction's equivilent of PvE mesmers in a sense. So going with Heros and hench are a good idea. Build yours teams around your needs when using Hero and Hench, a healer and a prot monk are good on a team and make your job a bit easier.

As for what chapter to start in, i would say Factions. Quick leveling, relitivly easy missions, fastes chapter. Nightfall is good but you can get stuck at certain missions, just as yo do in factions, for periods of time if you cannot get a pug or guild group. Never start in Prohp. 25 missions, annoying mission. I recomend avoiding it for quite some time.

Ok last question, BTW I thank everyone who has helped out for being so patient with my noobiness and helping me out, I've made a bid for some daggers at auction house, how does it work? Is the transaction a straight automated transfer of item for gold with my designated character in game. Or do I need to place the amount of gold I bid for the item in my Auction account, if so where is it? Its not very clear how the auction house works and I'm having trouble trying to find a how to guide for bidding and selling in the auction house.

its not an auction house. there is no auction house in GW. it is a sale/buy forum that has no connection with the game. you give the seller your in game name and meet up with them in game and buy for the agreed-upon price.

Yup to the Coloneh although heres hoping GW2 gets an auction house...anyway.

Best way to buy is to use a "WTB" message in the trade channel in either a major city like Kamadan, Kaieng, etc (Proph is pretty useless for WTB Sin items) or in an outpost close to where the item you want is farmed.

Should'nt take to long to get a wisp offer but just remember to barter as people will try to get max price first which is usually unrealistic.

bacically critical defences and critical eye are your best firend untill you can get critical agility.

Sins are probably the hardest class out there to balance defence with offence and still be able to do your deadly sin damage, so starting with one might not have been the best idea.

but otherwise, I love sins, they're my second favorite class (next to ranger) and It's really nice to see a sin asking for ways to improve his playing ability when most pve sins don't know how to play and wont ask (or take) advice.

keep up the good work.

Trouble With Blocking.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would keep going with this one. I'm now way past lvl 20, I have myself some nice imperial armour, and I'm over all happy with my build. Which is:

1. Death Charge/Shadow Form 2.Jagged Strike 3. Wild Strike 4. Death Blossum 5. Crit Defence 6. Shadow Refuge 7. Way Of Perfection 8. Crit Eye

DM 13, CS 11. Health 490, Power 31

I'm using a pair of Zealous Ancient Daggers of Dagger Mastery. They cost me 7.5k but I think they where worth it.

The biggest problem I'm coming up against now in PvE is blocking. The best I can do in these situations is to crtl/space bar the blocker and hope my henchies can deal with it, while I try and destroy the backline (rit/ele/monk etc.) Is there a good skill chain to overcome this blocking?

So my current build is based on the 'pressure' build concept I learnt from KalleDamos post. While this works well I'm having trouble taking out bosses with it. I think this may be because the duel-hand attack 'Death Blossum' is good for AoD, but not so good at killing bosses.

So my problem now is, how much of my defence skills should I sacrifice in order to juice up my attack? I'm still a long way from getting Moribus Strike, Critical Agility and changing my secondary profession to Dervish for Mystic Regeneration.

Does critical agility overcome blocking skills?

CritAgility only raises your Armour and gives IAS.

Get an Elite Assassin Tome for Moebius Strike. MS-DB is quite the overkill even against bosses.

You have Wild Strike, which should be enough for PvE since Prot Monks aren't nearly as prevalent and most blocks come from Stance sources. If you get to NF you could swap Jagged for Golden Fox Strike to ensure a clean sweep into the meat of your chain. As it is you could go A/N for Rigor Mortis, but I doubt it's worth it even with the low specs required.

As for your Attributes: they seem off. You should be able to make a 12-12-3 split by now, and your Critical Strikes should be at either 8 or 13 total (energy threshholds). Maybe there are still some quests you need done, check http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Attribute_quests

Now that you are lv20, focus on getting yourself runed up. As for the daggers you got: the Dagger Mastery suffix isn't all that great. Your best bet is to try and find a Dagger Handle of either Fortitude (+30HP) or Enchanting (+20% enchantment duration) for it.

1. Create a PvP Sin.
2. Go AB or RA for a while to gain Balthazar faction.
3. Unlock Moebius Strike for 3K Balth at the Priest of Balthazar.
4. Get back on PvE Sin.
5. Use Elite Tome.
6. Say goodbye to worries.

the key to making a successful assassin build is to cram as many dual attacks into as least skillslots as possible. of course, having mobius strike essentially makes your dual attack count into infinity.

Ok so I bought an elite assassin tome for 5k. I'm now broke. Can PvP character make gold for the 3k needed for Moribus, or do I have to keep going with PvE to make the gold.

With the 13CS Vs 13DM. I got the +1 DM Imperial mask. Is there anyway to get the +2 CS needed to get to 13 CS? And can you have both at 13 or is it only one or the other?

You don't need gold but faction. Which basically means you have to PvP a bit.

Why is normal so hard? I've played alot of games in my time, but GW takes the cake for over the top rediculousness for some mission! I just don't get it? Sure I would expect a hard mode and nightmare to be very challenging, but seriously GW normal mode is alot harder then some nightmare mode games I've played. Why have they done this...for example Eternal Grove mission. FFS just beating of the Luxon wave should be enough to complete the mission, to add a wave of infected is plain stupid! It kills the game. And yes I know its easy with H/H, yes it easy with H/H, if you have been playing for 2 years. For beginners its very very disheartening. Mission after Mission of just pure slog! There is fun in a challenge, but some of these mission are pure pain and are no fun AT ALL!

On a lighter note, finally made it to Eternal Grove, Moribus Strike is within my grasp woooooot. Now if only I could beat the stupid mission with henchies to open up the explorable area...

Anyone got tips on which henchies to take? I can pretty much beat the luxon wave, but the infected wave has me stumped. My build:

1. Golden Fox Strike 2. Wild Strike 3. Death Blossum 4. Impale 5. Shadow Refuge 6. Critical Defence 7. Critcal Agility 8. Critical Eye

Once I get MS all I have left is swap out Shadow Refuge for Mystical Regen. Once I get MS...very frustrated but still having fun^^

I never found Factions particulary difficult.. even when I started it and played it for the first time.. But then... My first character was a necro, not a sin ;p.

I suggest taking a friend with you, you take one side, while he takes the other. Each player should have a monk, an ele and depending on your friends class a war, or if you need it another monk. Or you could take a support rit, your choice.

Your build looks okay, but since its mainly a team game, your gunna need good builds and equipment for your heroes aswell.
