The @hotmail.com joke.

Just as a heads up, @hotmail.com email addresses will no longer be allowed for new accounts. We are having problems with some persistent spammers. If you currently have a hotmail email account all ready associated with your forum account you are fine, there's no need to change it. Thanks! This is a crap new "rule" or w/e.
There are other spammable e-mails (E.G. G-mail).
And this will just piss peaple off. There is no reason on banning @hotmail.com adresses from this forum. Neither will it solve your problem
fix this joke please.

sorry for my bad english i really suck at it.

It has solved the problem with the spammer. It has worked. As you said... there are other spammable e-mails which translates to "free" emails so coming up with another email address is not that hard if that's your concern. Go to any number of other providers and it's fine. Not really something to get over excited about.

"Methinks he doth protest to much" or some such stuff.
How is it affecting you, niek2004, that you are so aggrieved over this?
You already have a Guru account so no worries for you, and anyone registering for a new one will be told of the new rule in the process and will only need to get another free mail account at any one of a vast number of free web-based mail sites.
I am very happy for this (and any other) reasonable measure taken to prevent spammers on this forum.

Not allowed to have more than 1 guru account anyway? So unless you get permabanned...and want to get around it, there's no reason to make another, so the hotmail issue is irrelevant. Unless you suddenly can't make new spam accounts...eh niek2004?

It's not "we want people not to spam" from what I'm reading. It's "we want this guy who's been clusterf%^&ing us with spam from hotmail accounts to go away."
This doesn't look preventative, it looks reactionary, and it seems like it worked. The only people you should be mad at are the ones who've been abusing the e-mail priviledges to the point where they had to be cut off completely. How long does it take for you to get another e-mail account at a place other than hotmail? Gosh it takes so long to type gmail.com instead of hotmail.com.
I think people just want a reason to be lazy and not have to learn how to press the big "CREATE AN ACCOUNT" button on another equally-accessible site. Sheesh. Pissed off? I'd be more mad that someone made me read this topic when a solution is within arm's reach.

as stated, this only affects new potential members that want to sign up. Therefore, there should be no reason for users (that have an account here) to complain. And besides, the less spam the better right? Especially if it gets rid of a big problem I'm sure this would not have been implemented if there was an easier alternative.
Master Of Coldness
err right ... don't forget that there is a hotmail.de , live.com and live.de from Windows too. I mean that these are spammable too
But I think it's not so bad cause of spamers yes, but on the other hand it's not very nice for these who use the hotmail service as there main-e-mail-address.

I believe there definitely is a reason for users to complain. Hotmail isn't some unknown free email provider, they have been in the game for awhile now, and many people have hotmail accounts. From an IT perspective, I am surprised that they are just going to ban an entire domain from sending emails... that is such a bad move on their part. I think they would be better suited changing the way they automate their user account creation here. If you are worried about spammers, stopping a whole domain isn't going to do anything but piss people off... and it is pour security management. Spammers can just as easily move over to msn, yahoo, or gmail spamming... all of which are possible.
NOTE TO GUILDWARSGURU ADMINS....
Bad move and rather lazy. Take the time to actually take proper measures in blocking spammers. I understand that you may not have the technical manpower for this, but it is a price of running such a large forum...
I have poured over the code on this forum and see a few instances where it is really easy to spam here. Without inviting hackers here, which there are a few here already... have whoever wrote this code to take a look at some of the security flaws you have here, for example, changing "agreed=true" to "mode=agreed" (this was just an example) to try to prevent script bots from slamming this forum. This is not a cure, but make it a bit more difficult to get hit with spam bots.

But they haven't been having a specific problem from gmail, etc.
Right now, it's probably more effective just to limit these accounts. If it becomes a problem from other specific types of e-mail accounts, then they'll work on those. If this was a "professional" type forum that we all had to pay for to use, then I could see complaining about this. But, it's free. You get what you pay for. And we get more than what we pay for here if you think about it. I think the admins do a great job, especially based on the resources available to them.
Plus, I mean, there are other free e-mail accounts. Just get one of those...

I'd hate to get into a derail but how is that your paying for it. No money leaves your wallet.
It may not be a technical fix to the problem but if someone was going around giving everyone some communicable disease I'm sure you'd quarantine him before finding out how to cure the disease. So just chill. I'm sure they're doing everything within their power to fix it.

Also, the money doesn't leave my wallet, however, they also don't get any if I don't click around on this site. Do you understand that?

Why don't you just fix it for them then.
Since you obviously now more than everyone here, including all the people that run this site.
Or better yet, start you own site to compete with this one. Then you could do exactly what you wanted.
Just a few friendly suggestions.

Proxys, people get around permanent and IP bans VERY easily. You seem to act so high as if your opinion should be valued and agreed upon by all just because 1 annoying little person such as yourself disagrees with it? You have an account, your fine.
You (hopefully) registered to browse this forum as a Guild Wars fan or just love posting on forums, or being apart of a community - you didn't join GWGuru just to nag and brag that your giving GWGuru $0.001 every click you do (if that).. Get over yourself. The Way Out

Who the hell suggested IP bans, which is another crappy way to deal with spam? I work in the field, bro, and what I talk about, I generally have experience with. There is a definite difference between me talking from an experienced standpoint and me thinking I am high and mighty. I know some things and have the right to speak about them. I did register to browse this forum, and I am a fan of both the game and the forum. I am also a huge supporter for the community and generally oppose people that hijack threads with their seething negativity. Because I am a member of the forum, and because I have a little experience with html, xhtml, php, javascript, etc... I give my feedback. My company manages both internal and external mail server and we deal with spam on a day to day basis. Blocking an entire domain (a legit one, mind you) is retarded and not very efficient. So, the way I normally respond to people like you is this... stop getting emotionally worked up over things you don't know about. I know it is scary because you don't understand them, but it will be okay... I promise. Kattar

Funny, I was about to give you the same advice. Seemed like you were the one getting all worked up.
Bottom line, this isn't a big deal. Complain or not, it isn't going to effect how they do things. They're in charge here. If you truly have a good suggestion for Inde and Co. that isn't more Q.Q, then pass it on to them. The Way Out

sorry you missed the /sarcasm...
I honesly could care less... just find it amusing that people jump into threads and /flex for no damn reason. Especially when the talk about proxies (because they use them to bypass their parents parental blocks... lol) Inde
Wow, this post is way too funny.
I lifted the ban on hotmail email addresses 2 days ago. Notice how the announcement is gone. My point was never to ban the email's permanently... my point in banning them for a time was to DISRUPT this particular spammer and their technique. You take away the email address they always use (which means they have a method) and it takes them longer to post, longer to register so they leave. Which is what this particular spammer did. We scaled it up to the email ban by first banning the accounts they kept registering. That didn't work so next we censored the URL and the email address they continued posting. That didn't work (though I really don't see the point in even posting at that point as no one could see the website name) but next we started banning the IP's they were using. That didn't work, so then we temporarily banned the only email address they were using to accomplish this which was @hotmail.com. See? We always escalate and try new methods to fix the problem. This one worked. Minor note: The Way Out... this is vbulletin software. We don't "write" the code. It's a software, used by many many forums. One of the top forum softwares out there (we can debate the pros and cons of that software in another thread... I personally have my own favorite.) The Way Out

next time ill make my name XxX Naruto Power XXx or else ill look like a spammer!
dont make false, ungrounded acusements. And still making a new e-mail adress JUST so you can enter a forum seems a bit exceedive to me. If i made a guru account now and was told to make a new e-mail since there is spammers i would prolly say no, RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO it. spammers can get other free emails to spam with thats all im saying. This wont end here ±Hole± edit: just read it was removed, thanks. |
