Hello,

I am a really big GuildWars fan, which I'm guessing most of you are too :P
But I have been thinking and wondering, what happens down the road, in a few years or so when they quit releasing expansions, and their profit decreases, are they always going to keep their servers up and running for us to play?
I am hoping that they know how much we have spent on Guildwars, and all our time leveling and such does not turn out to just come to and end some day.

Please answer this for me, i tried emailing GuildWars support, but basically just got automated answers that did not help one bit.

Thanks everyone! =D

a couple years down the road will be the release of Guild Wars 2.

ANet has said they will always have the servers up and running as long as people are willing to keep playing.

Based on the history of the people running ANet, it's pretty safe to assume that they will run GW servers as long as they can, profitable or not. I think only the end of ArenaNet could shut 'em down, and even that wouldn't be a sure thing.

If you are still playing GW 1 year after GW2 is released (so around 2-3 yrs from now) then I think you got more than your money worth and if you are that big of a "fan" you will be playing GW2 anyway and not GW

i could get some proof, but i'd have to dig up one of the many interviews between ANet Heads and some gaming site...

I wouldn't doubt if you searched it on Riverside Inn, you could probably find something on the servers never closing.

And it is a definite on Guild Wars 2. ANet has stated that Eye of the North is a small preview to GW2. Whatever you put into your Hall of Monuments will be viewable by a character in Guild Wars 2.

So, basically, GW2 is a known fact by almost all of the GW community. :]

So you will not be able to use your characters from GW in GW2?

No. Your characters from Gw are dead in GW2. GW2 takes place over 200 years after the events in GW. Your character names in GW will be reserved for you in GW2.

Will you still be able to play GW1 after GW2 is out?

Are they still gonna run updates and stuff on GW1 or is it basically just gonna be all about GW2.

Without sounding mean or anything, but this information is all over the net. Do you really need to be here asking all your questions one at a time?

It is highly unlikely that they will add any more updates once Guild Wars 2 is out as the vast majority of the player base would have moved there instead.

EDIT - Here you go, loads of useful Guild Wars 2 Information

Why assume EVERYONE will be playing GW2. I will play GW regardless how bad/good GW2 is. There is still so much to do in the game and many players enjoy GW and will be able to live very happily even if they don't participate in GW2.

General principle of continuity, the base of attention will always primarily shift to the next phase of any system. Same is true for humans and continuous hobbies. While there will be an element that consists of people who stick with the older, but also likely continue with the new. But looking at trends, most people will either continue on and treat previous entries as history than can be redone but not reinstituted, or will dislike the next continuation and close their interest to the whole continuity.

Thats generally how things work. Think Diablo versus Diablo 2.

And OP, man there is info on this all over the web. As for GW1, there is no answer to your first question. Down the line costs might exceed benefit, and they will shut down the servers. No server lasts forever, especially MMO servers. How long they will last will depend on marketability. If they shut down the servers, I have a funny feeling they woud develop a way for us to continue in SP or third party servers since the system seems like it could be modified to do that. Thats my bet on the situation. GW2 will most likely attact enough of the original GW players that it will become illogical to provide direct support for anymore.

What do you mean by continue in SP or third party ways, Does that mean, you figure they will find a way that we will get to play, and they wont have to run the servers? Basically??...How would they do that though?

Zacky, I wouldn't worry too much about it; it will be quite awhile before GW2 is out anyway. But I have had the same concerns as you, and have been reassured that we will be able to keep playing as long s there are players like us (and I know there are many) who want to play. In the meantime: enjoy the game !!!

Sometimes the #2 version of the game changes too much from #1 and too much to being like a competitor's game, that #2 fails. I saw this on my last online game.

Dungeon Seige was very popular for 6+ years. They released #2 in the style of Diablo 2. Characters could not be transfered. DS allowed up to 8 players per instance, no matter connection type. DS2 limited instance party size based on type of internet connection you had. Dialup = party of 2. DSL = party of 4. Cable = party of 8. Instead of being able to build skills in all classes at the same time, i.e. melee, ranged, and caster, they went to splitting experience like D2, i.e. 1 handed or 2 handed, PBAoE, etc.

People's reaction: If I wanted to play D2, I wouldn't have bought DS2. DS1 server now down. DS2 server not too populated. Many now do WoW, GW, and Runescape.

As long as there is a server for GW and some people to occasionally play with, I will long on from time to time.

Awe, Im sorry you lost your game =(

If there was just some way that they could ensure the servers being up forever, my worries would be gone lol =D that would be a miracle =D

Yes they will continue to update Guild Wars.. But they most highly likely (99.9% certain) won't add any major additions to the game again.. e.g. Sorrow's Furnace, etc..

Forever is a bad word to use, nothing lasts forever, especially F2P games such as Guild Wars, what's paying for them?.. Nothing..

Just the fact that everyone has supported it, and did pay 50 bucks for the game, + all of its expansions, and spent all their time, makes me wish that they would make sure they kept the servers up for those that want to play for a really long time. Or at least make it possible to keep the servers up giving them some kind of option such as even paying 5 dollars a month, or some way..

Sorry to say, but most people wouldn't pa $5 a month. That is one thing that helps Guild Wars be as sucessful as it is... it is free forever. You buy the game and you are good.

Most people would instantly quit and join some crappy Korean-Hack 'n Slash Grind Fest than pay for a game. It is sad how that works, but it is true...

There are actually A LOT of people (atleast, more than you would expect) that are staying behind even if GW2 is good or bad. No matter what, they feel they have lots to do and accomplish before the next big transition, so they will stay back.

ANet said as long as people want to play Guild Wars, as it is, past the release of GW2, they will allow it.

I think this a legit question. In some ways GW uses the ulimate in copy protection. Half Life 2 can't even be played in single player mode without a connection to the internet to register.

I love putting in some of my older Bioware games like Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale. However, games like Myth: The Fallen Lords is unplayable as a multiplayer game since Bungie no longer supports it through their servers. They did not offer peer to peer connection. NWN on the other hand allows folks to have their own servers and direct connections.

If ANET should cease operation, then GW will cease, too, unless someone in the community can come up with indie servers.

Don't worry Zacky, something else will come along that will catch your interest eventually.

I mean, if Anet shut down tomorrow, someone would be paying attention and design a game much like this one to cater to the fan base.

Eventually the fan base will shift and decrease though. That's just life. And business. But by then something else much cooler will be out.

So don't worry so much. You'll find a way to survive.

That's all computer/video games though Zacky. Eventually they all die out. I used to be killer at the Tony Hawk games, and while they haven't died out completely, I lost interest. I don't feel bad for playing 4 or 5 of those games, since it was fun at the time.

It isn't necessarliy a waste of time for you to play one game a lot. If you just do it for relaxation and fun, then it isn't a waste of time at all. If you neglect other, more important things to do something that really isn't anything, like a video game, then we have problems.

Well you'll still have at least two years of valuable game play left. Wait till then to start worrying. I feel your pain though, I love this game so much that I'd hate for the original to come to an end.

I firmly believe it won't though.

I'm searching for the chat log/post that states, from an Anet employee, that the servers will remain open as long as people play, that should put your mind at rest, I'll edit when I find it.
