lately i have noticed multiple colors of text appering on all chats such as purple. i was just wondering if anyone knew how this is done.

purple chat is developer chat colors. I've only seen it used by Gaile Gray, ANet's Community Relations Rep.

standard chat colors are:
all: white; guild: green; team: blue; trade: red; alliance: orange

Wasn't it possible at one point to change the color of your own text from the standard white through some sort of keyboard command? Or am I just out of it?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've seen chat logs SS'ed to show people changing the text you can type to orange.. lemme see if I can find it..
