Microphone problems
Pure Disasta
Basiclly ever since i reformated two weeks ago my microphone doesnt work and not only does it not work but it isnt even deteceted. I'm plugging it into the same jack as always and its just not picking it up at all. Its from alterc lansing and its headset (microphones + microphone). Any ideas guys? Maybe driver missing or something blocking it I'm lost.

Now it probably seem obvious, but have u checked in the Control Panel on volume controls. If you select the recording option make sure the microphone isn't muted or turned down. For some reason it defaults to this.

Make sure you have the right sound drivers installed! It'll usually catch the standard microphones but not always the headset ones. Check on that.

How do i check I have the right sound drivers installed because i lost my disk for my sound card and I had to downloaded kX mixer just to be able to get my speakers to work.
And yes Ive checked my settings in control panel and on that note I also found the mic settings in kX mixer and its all turned on.
Also when i go Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Voice > Voice Recording Volume it doesnt even respond, meanwhile voice playback does.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management
Click Device Manager
Sound, video and game controllers.
It should say what audio you have if the drivers are properly installed.
Give your type soundcard ( if you have an onboard your motherboard ) type as well.

ATI T200 Unified AVStream Driver
Audio Codecs
Creative Game Port
kX 10k1 Audio - Generic
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs
Do i have to update all those drivers?

It may help if you tell us if this is if your microphone is USB or Audio-in...since it would save you alot of pointless troubleshooting if it is USB since USB headsets often do not even use your audio card.
And even if it is an Audio-in, you should really only have to re-install your drivers associated with audio. Depending on your card reinstalling video drivers is most likely unnecessary. You shouldn't need to reinstall any audio codecs either.

Use UnknownDevices to identify what your devices are so you know where to go to get drivers. http://www.halfdone.com/ukd/
I'm betting that you have a Creative sound card. You can go to Creative's website and use the Software AutoUpdate to install drivers.
You will need to uninstall your previous audio drivers first however to ensure there are no compatibility issues.

There could be many different things here. You haven't said what type of sound card (if any) you have or whether it's on-board sound.... and how many audio jacks there are - 3 or 6.
At any rate, here's something to check....
Many newer sound cards (or on-board sound chips) can do 5.1 surround sound. Those that only have 3 audio jacks (out, in & mic) do this by using the Mic input and Line input jacks as rear speaker and center channel/sub-woofer outputs. It's possible that the jacks defaulted to 5.1 (6 channel) output mode. Check to make sure you have installed the sound (card) drivers - either a separate CD for the sound card, or the CD with the motherboard drivers.
If there is some sort of setup program for the sound system, check the settings for the speaker jacks - if there are only 3 jacks, but the setup is set to 5.1 (6 channel) sound, then the jacks are probably reconfigured.
In that case set the sound option to "stereo speakers" (2-channel).

That tells us that you have an ATI Wonder or an All-In-Wonder video card, but that's not the sound card.
Go to START >> Programs a see if there's a setup program for the sound card in there somewhere - or try control panel.

Ok, let's potentialy solve one thought here.
Do you hear sound with the speakers?
If yes, then you have a sound driver installed, probably correctly.
Next, are you 100% sure it's plugged into the correct port in your PC? If you're using front ports, try the rear ports. Occasionally the front ones can get disconnected internally.
Under the audio mixer, check out recording instruments, and make sure the microphone is selected as the recording device (in XP, it's the check box that usually means muted on outputs).
Next, how do you know it's not working? Are you using Ventrillo? Make sure you disable push button to talk. Teamspeak? Again, check how it picks up your microphone.

Yes Speakers work downloaded a program called kX to get them to work.
100% sure its plugged in the right port its the one ive always used and ive unplugged and plugged and tried all dif ones.
Its not muted.
I know its not working because it doesnt even recognize i have a microphone when i go under control panel and go to the microphone test its just grayed out and non exsistent. Also tried using it while playing cs and that didnt work also.

You basically need to identify your soundcard (or, more likely that it is onboard sound) and rollback or update the drivers. Whatever is running your sounds now is just not recognising the fact that you have a mic input.
Tarun
If I recall correctly, kX are modified Creative drivers and aren't always very good.

Again, try uninstalling the driver and in IE, go to creative.com and use their Software AutoUpdate to find your drivers.

If that's the case, uninstall all Creative drivers and kX drivers through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
Use Driver Cleaner Professional to remove your Creative (and kX if available) drivers only.

And after i uninstall what am I supposed to use to get sound?

Use the UnknownDevices program I mentioned in a previous post to determine exactly what sound card you have, then visit the corresponding website to get the drivers. Creative's AutoUpdate does perfectly well for drivers, and Windows Update can also do nicely.
