If you want to level, create a roleplaying character. RP characters can jump into PvP anytime once they hit level 20.

If you want to play in Nightfall or Factions, and you own either, just go to Lion's Arch and take the quest/s to get there.

If you want to start a new character in one of those campaigns, then you need to create them there.

If you have those campaigns linked into your account, you don't have to create new characters in them. Characters can migrate between all of the campaigns on your account after they do some simple quests around the main port cities.

However, if you want to play as an assassin or ritualist you would have to make a Factions character, and if you wanted to play as a dervish or paragon you would have to make a Nightfall character (these professions can only be started in these campaigns)

You shouldn't have problems getting into groups as a warrior, as long as you're doing anything exceptionally stupid with your skill bar.

Ranger goes with just about anything, but you'd mostly be using ranger skills anyway.

For a Ranger, secondary professions would ideally be Mesmer, Monk or Elementalist. However, it's your choice.
