When the unlocked treasures were first introduced, I initially found the following behavior:
- On a per character basis, the very first time I opened a particular chest, I got a rare item and high amount of gold coins.
- If I waited about 1 month, the chests would reset to produce rare items. Checking before that time would produce a purple item with less gold, or if I checked way too soon, it was still empty.
That behavior lasted until recently. It appears that chests are no longer behaving that way anymore. I suspect ANet nerfed the unlocked chests because of how easy it was to farm them.
The new behavior I've been seeing over the last few months is as follows:
- First time a character opens a chest, they are no longer guaranteed a rare item.
- Waiting 1 month or longer will not cause a chest to reset fully. I usually just get purples with reduced coins, but once in a great while it will randomly give a rare item. Some of my characters have waited up to 4 months between openings and still get purples.
Although it's annoying that ANet appears to have nerfed this behavior, it's even more frustrating that they have never fessed up to it. They could save us all a lot of grief by explaining when these kinds of changes are made.

I've always gotten good golds (eagle defenders r9, diamond aegis r8, and many max mods).
ALL on my dervish though. My ranger gets crap, my ele gets crap, but dunno about my assassin (never did on him)

From what I've seen the chests reset every 30+ days.
Each time you open the chests the reward decreases untill after your 5th or 6th run all you get is purple with a very very slim chance of a gem dropping.
