I went with an Ursan group yesterday to see what the big deal was about Ursan and Mallyx. Why does everybody get all excited about not having an on-hand equipped when fighting Mallyx?
Btw, you can really tell when someone is lying about their Ursan level. They constantly get owned and required a lot of extra healing.
Why no weapons when fighting Mallyx?

Because of the spirits, when you attack you lose energy. If the ursans attack this way then they lose energy fast, and therefore lose Ursan form. If the Ursans lose ursan form the party fails.
Now, it's perfectly acceptable to hold weapons, as long as you don't attack with them. Just that most of the morons at DoA are very impressionable as they've managed to beat Mallyx the first time while being lead by someone who said not to use weapons, and from then they think that's the only way.
My advice is to keep holding your weapon (for whatever bonuses it gives you. +5e, +5al, +30hp etc. are better than nothing) and ignore the moron that tells you not to hold your weapon.

Basically, for the reasons stated above. Most groups will insist you lose your weapon. I do it just to make them happy, so if the group fails they can't blame it on me keeping my weapon, but basically if you just use your attack skill and don't stand there swinging your weapon like a noob it shouldn't matter if its equipped or not.
Also, make people wear their norn title before you leave, so you can see what level they are. As much as I hate being elitist about a title, it's a lot easier to take a group of r8+ through fow/uw/doa than a random group of r1-r10.
