hi, i'm new on GW and i've been thinking about a ele/ranger build using the pet as a tanker, does these build work at all?

Short answer - no, it doesn't work.
Basically... Enemies in GW will simply ignore the pet - it has a hefty 80 armour at level 20, and the AI will merely go beat up something squishier instead.
Just forget the pet altogether, tbh - it wastes a quarter of your skillbar just being there (Charm and Comfort skills); then if you actually want it to do something, you need to waste half your attributes pumping Beastmastery up to 12, then even more skill slots on pet attacks so it can actually do any noticeable damage.
You'd be better off just casting Flare instead. And Flare itself is pretty bad.

look under pvxwiki to find some good combination of skills for your ele.
Ele/Ranger is not a good combination for an ele if you plan to use a pet.
For starters i will recommend an Ele/Monk or Ele/Mesmer.
Stormlord Alex was refering to the AI of the game. Monsters usually go after players with low armor (in this case the ele).

i had a joke buld i used in PVE for a while with a pheonix

E/R + pet works in pre-searing, after that just forget it
Actually, my elementalist started as an E/R, not because of any particular skill synergy but as a way to get UAS back in 2005 (there were only 4 character slots per account, one of those needed for PvP so in addition to E/R I rolled a Mo/W and N/Me to cover all core professions).
The only ranger skill that sometimes ended up on my ele's skill bar was Distracting Shot which was pure pawnage back then and is still one of the best skills in the game
