Do You Know Oni?
StormDragonZ
We don't know much about them except they're annoying and like to spawn out of nowhere just to relentlessly attack.
Even the wiki page doesn't explain much at all.
Is it possible we'll see them again in GW2?
I also noticed that when I type in Oni into the search... nothing comes up...

The better wiki says:
So no, no one knows. Any real speculation should be in Druid's Overlook.
They're also out of Japanese lore, if you didn't know that. They're basically just demons.
Quote:
The nature and origin of Oni is not clear. They are demonic creatures in terms of species, and their corruption is closely tied to Kanaxai, the dark entity lurking within the Deep. Dauv Merishahl, a Luxon collector, offers this theory: "Oni are curious creatures. We of the Turtle Clan believe they were once human but have become twisted by terrible nightmares from the deep within the Jade Sea. They are similar to the Luxons known as Outcasts, driven to the edge of insanity and irrationally violent. Oni may hold the key to discovering the true nature of the Outcasts." |

Check out the Deep. As I recall Kannaxi is both the source of the Luxon Outcasts and the Oni throughout the land. (Demon Spawn)

Well, they're demons that seem to have no affiliation with Abaddon, Dhuum, and Menzie's little crew; but instead work for Kanaxai, who seems to be his own guy.
With Kanaxai dead, the oni might simply disappear - however, as the appearence of the oni isn't a recent thing (Hao Zhang, a collector, mentions them 'in legend'), it might also be that they are their own creatures that will continue to haunt Cantha, albeit without the leadership of Kanaxai (who knows? Kanaxai might just be a submissive of some greater evil; like the Lich was for Abaddon and the Great Destroyer is for Primordius)

I know this sounds weird, but I always thought they were similar to the Aloe that spawn in Prophecies - they just kind of appear and attack the players...

I would LOVE to play an Oni!

We dont really know where Kanaxai came from other than him being excavated and corrupting the Luxons that got to him. For all we know there could be other beings like him that command/spawn other Oni. You cant kill a Nightmare so perhaps some remnant of the original Kanaxai will crop up in GW2 resulting in more Oni.
It would be nice to see their return.

Unless the origin of demons is racially divided like the human lands (Tyria, Cantha, Elona), they'd surely be from the same place Abaddon's demons are from, but then again, we see none in the Realm of Torment.
I dunno really, I wish we knew more of them. If I recall they also mention they come from a dimension of pure insanity or something.

They most likely aren't related to Abaddon, or they would've been in the RoT.

as I see it, Oni are the next stage in Kanaxai's corruption of the luxons. He corrupts Luxons, making them outcasts, after a while they turn into Oni. Maybe after a while they turn into those copies of Kanaxai, and the Kanaxai we really fought in The Deep was a more advance copy of Kanaxai, who knows. The idea of Oni being a playable race in GW2 would be PWNAGE, that would most definatly be my first race pick.

and how would you explain the Oni on Shing Jea island and such?

Actually I think they're more like wolves. They hunt in small packs, but don't report to an organized intelligence. Did Kanaxai really control them, or did he just train them like you can train war dogs?
I don't know why, they just don't seem overly intelligent to me, more like animals. Perhaps it's the fact that they're all the same class. And the deamon part, well, they might just be of deamonic descent rather than a deamonic force.
I do think they'll be GW2 however, because they're too awesome to leave out. We may find out more about them then.

Actually Kanaxai is really interesting. I've never thought about who he is. It seems to me that he can't just be a natural occurrence, otherwise there'd be lots similar to him. Is he a demi god, like Dhuum? Or an unbound general of abbadon? Perhaps he was created by the jade wind.
Urgoz is the leader of the wardens, right? And the wardens were like druids or sylvari, a race that evolved naturally and weren't summoned. Urgoz ageless I presume, since it says in his guildwiki artical he's been around for a while. He might just be this tree that natural evolved by some random occurrence and his offspring were wardens. He was once the guardian of Echovald. Do all forests have guardians? Do all areas have guardians? If so, Kanaxai could be a corrupted guardian of the Jade Sea, turned evil by the jade wind.
Anyway, the outcasts are humans driven mad by kanaxai. The fish are driven mad by Kanaxai too. I think he may be an embodiment of the evil that froze the sea in the jade wind. So, he was created when shiro died. What do you think?

They wont be playable, because they have no backstory. But I admit it would be nice.
as for their origins, I'll go with Vorstagg's theory. (too lazy to quote)

Mesmer in Need
Heres how i think it happened:
During the jade wind, Kanaxi was awakened, but imprisoned deep within the jade.
Years later, Luxon miners were mining under their capital city of cavalon, when they hit a deep pocket of air. This explains the chiseled out look of the first part of the deep, opposed to the smooth later half. Within this pocket, they found the demons, and ended up releasing them. The survivors either ran or became outcasts, corrupted by Kanaxi, and the mining was stopped. More outcasts moved in, and the jade fish followed suit. Corrupted by the demons, they became more deadly then their topside counterparts. The pits left by the miners is now the deep. The oni's come up from thin layers in the roof from the deep. They can travel through tunnels left by the dredge, and this explains the oni in kurzick lands, and even in tunnels under the ocean to shing jea. All the tunnels lead back to the end room in the deep.
