Hi
I recently got a new computer and ever since i have been unable to play Guild Wars. GW causes my computer to freeze completely and nothing aside from reset can unfreeze it. My computer has 3g memory, 2.6ghz processor, NVIDIA 8500 GT card and Vista.
So far I've tried the following:
Checked that hardware is good enough(were more that good enough)
checked temperatures(were fine)
Disabled the sound
used the lowest graphic settings
shutdown all unnecessary processes
updated all drivers
Set the program to run on only one processor core instead of two
set the program compatibility mode to windows XP
so far nothing has worked. As you might guess I'm getting a bit desperate.

Could always be Vista. Have you tried running it in XP mode?

Dual-Core CPU by any chance? Try setting the CPUs affinity to run on a single core when running Guild Wars.
EDIT: I see you've done that already.

Lol, i had the same problem before i bought a new laptop. No worries - your hardware is up to it so dont go to the extent of buying another CPU. Try out these:
1) try running it on dual-core then single, find out which one freezes quicker
2) upon doing this, put it on the one that takes longer for it to freeze, and wait for it to freeze
3) try xp, vista is great, but only if u have ultimate and service pack 1. XP is fast, which could be better
4) wait. simply wait up to a minute. this is my biggest trick because vista is so good at getting non-responsive programs to run, if u just wait it could fix it itself
Good luck and have fun,

Oh interesting, how do I switch to single core? Thanks a lot=) I get the same problem the topic maker has

Aziru
how do I switch to single core?
Go to task manager and select gw.exe. right click the process and elect affinity. If you have dual core processor, it will show [cpu 0 and cpu1] checked. then you just uncheck one of them.

Ah thanks for the info, now I know how to switch to single core style=) I hope it doesn't crash anymore

I also found that installing CpuIDLE Exterme (7.5 latest I think) is alleviating the problem, it went from being frozen in 20 min flat to 0-1 time per 3-4 hrs, I will try to couple this with forcing single core, and I hope it will completely eliminate the issue.
