In Prophecies, do the henchmen ever get higher than level 3? Just reached Piken Square and they've (the Healer, naturally, and been flipping between the Fighter and the Archer, though the former seems to be more effective) been doing fine so far, but if they remain at level 3 forever, well...

Yes, they reach level 20 eventually.

They should be L6 in Piken Square.

Ah, they are! I left the game as soon as I reached Piken Square (damn you, sleep!), then took a few minutes before bed to read/post, so hadn't had to re-recruit the ones I had...
