Seems like this skill just got "discovered" a week ago. There was a sudden surge of Dervishes in GvG matches during the past week, and most of them carried this with Pious Fury or Pious Assault.

That's because most self-rending skills for Dervishes weren't worth the skill slot until recently. Pious Fury maybe, but it had obvious drawbacks to Heart of Fury which likely turned people off. The new-look Pious Assault probably was enough to cause people to re-evaluate self-rending.

Grenths Aura provides easy AoE enchant removal exactly when it's needed (before the deep wound). In PvE, it's not so good, but the fact that you can use that on two teleporting dervishes as well as have a shatter on an EC/SD mesmer makes it a very powerful spike.

Pious assault is on every dervish in its current state, and enchantments are annoying in the current meta. Put the 2 skills together and you have good synergy.

grenth's aura + AoB dervs with pious assault/fury + EC mesmer removes 2-4 enchantments right on the spike which makes it pretty hard (darn well impossible) to pre prot / reflex prot.

oh ya me and my guild were gvging last night and got RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed up from 2 aobs running that spike. the monks did at least.

Ive not tried it in GvG, but working it into Melandru got me a pretty hefty winning streak in RA. (i know, i know, RA only has N00bs, so what! Im just saying)

I recall using - just for a laugh - guiding hands followed by a spike against monks, then test of faith to really rattle them. This was in RA, though, where anything works if you try hard enough.

DSpike's getting hit later this week, anyway. Whether that's in Grenth's Aura or Pious Assault, I don't know.

Lol, Grenth's Aura just got nerfed into oblivion. Pious Assault got nerfed to the speed of a regular attack.
