All video game communities are as bad as each other. They all share the one same fatal flaw afterall.

Apparently that's not the case. Perhaps these are the kind of jerk who think a game that has a fee = awesome making them "awesome". Also, WoW is famous so it has naturally drawn more people in general. Despite not really being any different from any other MMORPG (in terms of what audience it appeals to), I've found a lot more adults on Guild Wars than teenagers. Once again, perhaps all those immature teenagers who think WoW is awesome just because it has its name everywhere went there? Then again I'm a teenager. Immature? No. |
I like gw because its tactical PvP. I mostly come from a FPS background I'm not really into mmorpgs because of their incessant grind gameplay, but gw is different. Rewarding players for using their head instead of using their time. Playing with your head is something that gw rewards players for.
The best guild wars players are not the best PLAYERS, they are the BEST LEADERS. Tactics calling is something that is revered. One in particular have told me "I tread a GvG like a game of chess" he calls for players to be positioned and executing the right things at the right time. This kind of coordination takes a bit of maturity. I have not met top 100 guilds playing with anyone lower than age of 15. Even then it is rare to find anyone younger than 17 years old playing guild wars pvp.
My experience with coordinated pve, noted that it has been little, but from what I have observed 7 out of 10 times the players I play with are generally the older crowed. Even older than the hardcore pvp age bracket. They usually have families or kids and want to play guild wars but can't commit to the demanding pvp lifestyle.
Games based on grind are dumb. It saddens me to see that there is a trend for grind based FPS now in the market after the success of Battlefield series. I hope GW stays true to the no grind play. I don't mind paying monthly for the game as long as it is a enjoyable experience.
In the end grinding MMOs are "Dime a Dozen" with East Asia puking out game after game with the same gameplay but different graphics. For that reason alone I consider guild wars a diamond in the rough.

Well, if you keep local off, Guild Wars isn't that bad. But I'll tell you LOTRO is much better community wise.
Course that's because that game appeals to a more mature playerbase. While this one is a more competitive game and nearly every competitive person is an arsehat.

I always figured it was psychologically weak or tormented people (think nerds in middle school getting swirlied all day) using the anonymity afforded by online play to work out frustrations at their real life victimizers. Meh... I'd rather have some gangly dork venting his anger through Halo or Guild Wars than the barrel of a gun, I guess.

Personaly, I think we should have a GW LAN party
That way if someone quits on our team, we can just get up and beat the crap out of him.
Works wonders on community behaviour.

The ploy didn't really work, though. The first question from every prospective buyer is still "is it really free to play?" followed by suspicion when informed that, yes, it's free to play.
EDIT: Oh, and I agree that Enxa probably is on to something. I hadn't thought about it like that, but it's quite a convincing argument.

Also wealthy parents doesn't mean Bill Gates is your dad, it means your parents make enough to be able to spend money on more expensive luxuries.
